Sting operation row: Karnataka Congress expels Krupa Alva
Citing anti-party activities, the KPCC, under the instructions of its president, expelled her from the party for a period of six years, with immediate effect.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee expelled former General Secretary Krupa Alva from the party for six years over alleged involvement in a sting operation targeting Congress leaders.
The order dated 27 October said, “Following the negative publicity and reactions in the media regarding a ‘sting operation’ targeting Congress leaders in the state of Karnataka, which caused embarrassment to the Congress party, a ‘show-cause’ notice was issued to you in light of allegations that you were involved in this incident.”
The notice further said that Alva had not provided any response.

The expulsion order was issued by KPCC vice-president M Narayanaswamy.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has expelled former General Secretary Kripa Alva from the party for six years over alleged involvement in a sting operation targeting Congress leaders. The October 27 order cited alleged anti-party activities and her failure to respond to a show-cause notice
Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah earlier this month said the alleged sting-operation video targeting him was fabricated to blackmail him and called for a fair investigation to identify those behind it, regardless of whether they belonged to the Congress or another party.
Speaking to reporters, the veteran AHINDA leader named Krupa Alva, a Congress leader, and Rakesh Shetty, owner of Power TV, as those behind the alleged plot.
Siddaramaiah said the case had come to his notice on 26 September. Maintaining that he had done nothing wrong, he said there was no question of being afraid of or distressed by the allegations.
“No matter who attempts to malign my reputation, I know what the truth is. I know that this case has been fabricated in its entirety. Whatever the motives of those behind it may be, the truth must emerge through the investigation. I am confident that a fair investigation will bring the truth before the public,” he said.
The Bengaluru City Police have prima facie found that the allegations levelled against former chief minister Siddaramaiah in the controversial sting video were part of a fabricated, deliberately constructed narrative.
In a media statement issued on Thursday, 29 October, the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner’s office said a comprehensive investigation was underway into the creation, recording, possession, transfer and subsequent dissemination of the alleged sting video.
“The evidence gathered so far prima facie indicates that the allegations of sexual abuse portrayed in the video are part of a fabricated and deliberately constructed narrative. The statements recorded, and evidence collected during the investigation thus far do not substantiate the occurrence of any such incident as depicted in the video,” the police said.
Who is Krupa Alva
Krupa Alva, a Congress leader and spokesperson from Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada district, is the other principal person of interest in the investigation. She chaired the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights from 2015 to 2018, during Siddaramaiah’s first tenure as Chief Minister.
Alva entered public life after her husband, Amar Alva, was shot dead in Mangaluru in 1992, reportedly in a gang rivalry. She subsequently established the Amar Alva Charitable Trust and became involved in social service before joining the Congress.
Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah, the former Chief Minister’s son, suggested that Alva’s political ambitions in contesting the Assembly election from Puttur on a Congress ticket might have motivated the operation.
Alva appeared before the Crime Branch for questioning. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president B K Hariprasad said the party would issue her a show-cause notice.
Origins of the controversy
The controversy began on 9 October, when Congress MLA Ganiga Ravikumar alleged that a Union Minister and a Karnataka BJP leader had hired a Delhi-based agency to conduct sting operations targeting 10 Karnataka Ministers to embarrass the Congress government.
Siddaramaiah denied any connection to the purported operation and accused “miscreants” of using the video circulating on social media to damage his reputation. He also lodged a complaint with the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, seeking an impartial investigation into the video, and appealed to the media and the public not to circulate false information.
Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy led a JD(S) march to the Director General of Police’s office in Bengaluru on 17 October, demanding action against those allegedly behind the operation.
He claimed that the purported video showed a woman being questioned about the time she had spent with a man and asked to identify marks on his body.
“When Siddaramaiah sees all this, doesn’t his blood boil?” Kumaraswamy asked. “What complaint have you filed, Siddaramaiah?”
Separately, the Bengaluru City Civil and Sessions Court issued an interim order restraining media organisations and social media platforms from publishing, circulating or hosting the purported sting operation video.
Siddaramaiah had approached the court on 12 October, seeking a temporary ex parte injunction against the defendants and related persons to prevent the video from being telecast or published through any medium.
