K’taka sting Op row: Siddaramaiah sees character-assassination bid, claims innocence
The veteran Congress leader said he had lodged a complaint with the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, seeking an impartial investigation into the sting operation video to bring out the truth.
Synopsis: Siddaramaiah has approached the court and police to uncover the truth behind a video circulating on social media. He said certain miscreants were spreading the video to tarnish his reputation and assassinate his character with political motives. Claiming innocence, he urged the media and the public not to circulate false information.
Karnataka’s former chief minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday, 13 October, said efforts were being made to assassinate his character with political motives by linking his name to a sting operation video circulating across various social media platforms.
Taking to X, the Congress Working Committee member denied any connection to the reported sting operation video. “Certain miscreants have been using it to spread malicious propaganda against me,” he said.
Siddaramaiah made the statement a day after filing a petition before the Bengaluru City Civil and Sessions Court, seeking an injunction restraining newspapers, television channels and social media platforms from publishing or broadcasting the sting operation video in connection with his name.
The veteran Congress leader claimed innocence. “My conscience is clear that I am completely innocent,” he posted, adding that those familiar with his five-decade political career also knew he was innocent.
“However, in this age of advanced technology, it has become easy to portray falsehoods as truth,” Siddaramaiah said, adding that he approached the court as a precautionary measure.
“I have nothing else to fear. I firmly believe that truth will ultimately prevail,” he said.
The Congress leader said he had lodged a complaint with the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, seeking an impartial investigation into the sting operation video to bring out the truth.
He appealed to the media and the public to refrain from circulating false information.
Siddaramaiah approached the court amid allegations and counter-allegations between the Congress and JD(S) over the purported sting operation against the former chief minister.
Union Minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy has questioned Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s alleged links to those behind the purported sting.
Shivakumar himself had alleged last week that someone tried to discredit him through a sting operation.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Ganiga Ravikumar said on Friday, 9 October, that a Union Minister and a Karnataka BJP leader had hired a Delhi-based agency to conduct sting operations against state ministers and embarrass the Congress government.
Ravi claimed they had tried to conduct sting operations targeting 10 Karnataka ministers.
