An Assistant Professor at the state-run Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Adilabad has been removed from service after he was arrested by the Adilabad 2 Town Police over his alleged involvement in an attack on some students.
The professor and four others were arrested for the 13 December incident that occurred on the institute’s premises, based on a complaint by a student, the police said on Friday, 15 December.
The complainant alleged that the ‘”attackers” had tried to knock the students down with their car when the latter tried to stop the vehicle. The car, which allegedly hit a gate, was also seized, they said.
The motive behind the attack was the professor being irked over a student’s rude behaviour with his relative who is the Director of the institute.
The students held protests over the last two days seeking removal of this top official from his post, police sources said.
Meanwhile, a senior health official said that the Assistant Professor, who was employed on contractual basis, was removed from service on Thursday.
A committee has been constituted by the institute to investigate the issue and prevent recurrence of such undesirable incidents in other medical colleges. They visited the premises on Friday, the official added.
On 13 December, a group of house surgeons were allegedly attacked by a five-member gang at RIMS Adilabad.
The assailants, identified as Dr Kranthi Kumar, Wasim, Shiva, and two unidentified men, attacked six house surgeons on the RIMS campus, causing injuries. The medicos accused Dr Kumar, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, of orchestrating the assault.
“The reason for the attack on the junior doctors is that the interns questioned the unavailability of facilities in the institute. They interacted with Director Dr Jaisingh Rathod and, to their surprise, they were attacked on Wednesday (13 December) night, saying they were the fans of the Director,” Dr Arun Voruganti, President of the RIMS Junior Doctors’ Association, told South First.
The Director, too, has been booked.
The attacked house surgeons are Dr Bharat, Dr P Naveen, Dr Kaviraj, Dr Abhishek, Dr Pasupuleti Naveen, and Dr Vijay.
