A second-year MBBS student of Gandhi Medical College allegedly died by suicide at his house in Hyderabad on Sunday, 9 July.
According to his mother, the student — 20-year-old Deekshit Reddy — was reportedly suffering from depression over the past two years.
“He was under treatment and taking medications. But, he stopped the medications two months ago and told us that he was doing well,” said his mother in her complaint to the police.
According to police, he took the extreme step between 3 pm and 6 pm, when there was no one at home. His mother and sister had gone to Secunderabad for shopping and returned around 6 pm.
“Her mother knocked on the door but he did not open it. She thought that he might be studying, but there was no response for a long time,” said the police.
“She grew suspicious and broke a window with the help of a renter in her house, and found her son’s body,” they added.
Local reports claimed that the medical student mutilated his private parts and died of exsanguination. A police officer, however, refuted this when contacted by South First.
He also said that the police did not find any suicide note, as the family had claimed.
“The family suspects that he might have taken this step due to depression,” said the aforementioned police officer.
A case was registered at the Jagadgirigutta Police Station in Hyderabad under Section 174 of the CrPC.
This is the third case of suicide among MBBS students in Telangana this year. Previously, two students at Nizamabad Medical College in the state died by suicide.
The 22-year-old Sanath Kumar was found unresponsive in his hostel room on the morning of 31 March.
On 25 February, a third-year MMBS student was found dead in his hostel room under similar circumstances.
