The Adilabad 2 Town Police have arrested an assistant professor of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Telangana’s Adilabad after a group of house surgeons were allegedly attacked by a five-member gang.

The assailants, identified as Dr Kranthi Kumar, Wasim, Shiva, and two unidentified men, attacked six house surgeons on the RIMS campus, causing injuries. The medicos accused Dr Kumar, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, of orchestrating the assault.

“The reason for the attack on the junior doctors is that the interns questioned the unavailability of facilities in the institute. They interacted with Director Dr Jaisingh Rathod and, to their surprise, they were attacked on Wednesday (13 December) night, saying they were the fans of the director,” Dr Arun Voruganti, President of the RIMS Junior Doctors’ Association, told South First.

The director, too, has been booked.

The attacked house surgeons are Dr Bharat, Dr P Naveen, Dr Kaviraj, Dr Abhishek, Dr Pasupuleti Naveen, and Dr Vijay.

All six suffered injuries

Dr Kaviraj sustained a head injury, an upper lip laceration, and blunt injuries on his chest. Others, too, suffered minor injuries.

The FIR accessed by South First said that the attackers, who arrived in a white Hyundai Creta and a Royal Enfield Bullet, confronted the house surgeons in front of the mens’ hostel on RIMS Adilabad campus. Abhishek was allegedly dragged for 500 metres when he tried to stop the assailants from fleeing in the car.

The police have registered a case under Sections 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 447 (punishment for criminal trespass), and 307 (attempt to murder), read with 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Following the incident, the students staged a protest on the campus, demanding the termination of Dr Kumar and the transfer of the Director for the lack of security on campus.

Dr Voruganti added that the house surgeons have boycotted duties, except emergency duties. He warned that they would boycott all duties from Saturday, 16 December, if their demands were are not met.
