Statistics from the National Institute of Aging tell us that about one in four people aged 65 years and above suffer a fall every year. As the population ages, the importance of preventing falls among the elderly cannot be overstated.

Falls can lead to serious injuries and significantly impact the quality of life for older adults.

Speaking to South First, Dr Deepak Sampath, Senior Consultant — Orthopaedics, Joint Replacement, and Sports Medicine at Hosmat Hospitals in Bengaluru, lists some crucial tips for families and caregivers to help ensure fall prevention and the safety of their elderly loved ones.

1. Promote Routine Exercise

Regular physical activity is key in helping older adults maintain or improve their muscle tone and balance. Exercises specifically designed for older adults can strengthen muscles and enhance coordination, significantly reducing the risk of falls.

2. Early Detection of Neurological Issues

It’s vital to be proactive about health checks. Detecting neurological problems early can be crucial in preventing falls. Regular medical check-ups can help identify issues that might affect balance and healthcare providers can recommend appropriate medication or walking aids when necessary.

3. Encourage Use of Walking Aids, Good Footwear

Sturdy walking canes and other aids can be invaluable for those who struggle with balance. Additionally, shoes with rubber soles can provide better grip and stability, reducing the likelihood of sudden slips.

4. Make the House Fall-Proof

Ensuring the home environment is safe is essential. This includes installing handrails on staircases, providing sufficient lighting, and keeping walking areas tidy and free of obstacles. Small changes in the home can make a big difference in preventing falls.

Tips to keep the house safe for older adults:

  • Keep floors clear and tidy. Remove items that are easy to trip over, like loose wires, small furniture, and clutter.
  • Fix any loose or frayed edges on rugs and carpets. Non-slip mats are ideal, especially in bathrooms and Kitchen areas.
  • Ensure that your home is well-lit. Especially on staircases, near the bed.
  • Keep frequently used items in easy-to-reach places. Avoid storing things in high or difficult-to-reach areas to prevent the need for climbing or stretching.
  • Secure cords and wires away from walking paths to avoid tripping.
  • Make sure stairs are in good condition and have secure handrails on both sides.
  • Arrange furniture to create clear pathways for walking.
  • If you have children then ensure their toys are not on the floor, leading to tripping of elderly.
