A group of Hyderabad-based gynaecologists proficient in conducting robotic-assisted surgeries has come together to form an association to exclusively help the younger generation learn the use of this technology and perform more precise procedures in gynaecology-related surgeries.

The doctors have formed the Association of Gynecological Robotic Surgeons (AGRS) — the first of its kind in India — and have decided to hold a two-day meeting, RoboGynIndia 2022.

The event, to be held on 13-14 August, is expected to exclusively discuss and train gynaecologists on how to make this technology clinically relevant to them.

Robotics-assisted surgeries in demand

Speaking to South First, Dr Rooma Sinha, the doctor who performed the first-ever robotic gynaecological surgery for a uterine tumour in India, said, “I have been in this field for the last 28 years, and have over a decade of experience in minimally invasive surgeries. The field has picked up, and the number of people opting for this kind of surgery in India has gone up.”

She added: “It is very beneficial for women and our doctors must learn this new technique.”

Sinha, a senior consultant for gynaecology and laparoscopic surgery at Apollo Health City in Hyderabad, is also the organising chairman of the meeting.

International doctors may attend

The participants have already registered, and there is a very good response from doctors across the country, Sinha said about the meeting.

It is expected to host four international faculty with experience in precision surgeries, besides Indian doctors.

The doctors will discuss topics like how to start a successful gynaecological robotic surgery programme, strategies to overcome barriers, and how to make these surgeries economically feasible.

Technology like the da Vinci Surgical System, Hugo RAS, Versius, and SSI Mantra are expected to be on display, with Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan inaugurating the event.
