Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who played the antagonist in the recently released, Maharaja, discussed his collaboration with Vijay Sethupathi, emphasising that the decision to join the project was largely influenced by the Super Deluxe (2019) actor.

Working on Maharaja was a fantastic experience, said Anurag Kashyap.

“Vijay Sethupathi was the one who convinced me to sign the project. I had been declining acting offers in Tamil cinema for a while. He watched Kennedy (2023), visited my office, and shared some suggestions, which I found valuable. It was during this meeting that he discussed the story of Maharaja. Honestly, I was drawn to the project because of him,” he added.

Reflecting on his connection with Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap said that they first met years ago during discussions for Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2018).

Anurag Kashyap observed, “He had initially agreed to do that Hindi film, but it didn’t work out. That’s why I decided to do Maharaja. Then I met the director, Nithilan Saminathan, who is reserved yet kind and decisive. Vijay Sethupathi helped me with the performance and language, which greatly contributed to the outcome.”

The Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) director mentioned that Vijay Sethupathi would bring home-cooked food every day, and they discussed a wide range of topics related to cinema.

‘Vijay Sethupathi, a supportive co-star’

“He’s remarkably confident and supportive as a person. It’s unusual to find actors who are so secure that they actively ensure their co-actors shine. He motivated me to strive for excellence, sometimes even pushing me to outdo him. Today, he’s not just a colleague but a close friend,” he noted.

Maharaja, which opened to mixed reviews on 14 June, marked Vijay Sethupathi’s 50th film milestone. Nithilan Saminathan, along with Raam Murali, penned the dialogues for it.

Maharaja also featured Mamta Mohandas, Natty, Abhirami, Munishkanth, Manikandan, Singam Puli, and Bharathiraja among others. Produced by Sudhan Sundaram and Jagadish Palanisamy, Maharaja boasts cinematography by Dinesh Purushothaman, music by B Ajaneesh Loknath of Kantara (2022)-fame, and editing by Philomin Raj.
