Veteran Malayalam actor Poojappura Ravi is no more

The actor was staying with his daughter at Marayoor in the Idukki district and passed away due to age-related illness

Eminent Malayalam actor Poojappura Ravi passed away on Sunday, 18 June, due to age-related illness. He had issues related to breathing.

He was staying with his daughter at Marayoor in the Idukki district. The actor was 86.

Prominent stage actor

Poojappura Ravi is associated with the well-known drama troupe Kalanilayam Drama Vision and acted in over 4000 plays. The actor has acted in over 800 films.

In the 1992 movie Kallan Kappalil Thanne, Ravi portrayed the character of Subramaniyam Swamy which was much appreciated.

Ravi’s final on-screen appearance was in the film Guppy, which was released in 2016.

Versatile actor

Ravi’s journey in the film industry began in the mid-1970s. He debuted with Veluthambi Dalawa in 1962. The actor initially took up small roles, but later proved to be a versatile actor capable of doing good roles.

The veteran actor excelled in comedy roles, and his comic timing was impressive. The actor got good roles in films like Mutharamkunnu PO (1985) and Odaruthammava Aalariyam (1984) garnered appreciation.

In the 1990s, Ravi also acted in television serials.

Poojappura Ravi participated in Akashvani Radio drama when he was in seventh standard. He later became a regular in Akashvani during the start of his career.

He has acted in films directed by Joshiy, Sibi Malayil and Vinayan. The actor has also been associated with Priyadarshan in many films.

It was an interesting fact that Malayalam superstar Mohanlal also spent his early days in Poojappura.

The actor’s house in Mudavanmugal is near Poojappura and old stories say that Mohanlal’s father and Poojappura Ravi were friends.

Personal life

Poojappura Ravi’s original name is Ravindran Nair. After he joined the Kala Nilayam drama troupe, he changed his name as there were many actors named Ravi.

Poojappura Ravi was born to Madhavan Pillai and Bhavaniyamma in Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram.

He was the eldest of four siblings. Ravi was married to Thankamma. He has a daughter named Lakshmi and a son named Hari Kumar.

Ravi shifted to Marayoor in December last year where his daughter lived.

Poojappura Ravi’s body will reach Trivandrum today. The cremation will be held tomorrow.

Condolences

Social media is flooded with condolences for the thespian actor who made a trademark with his fine acting. FEFKA Directors Union have condoled the death of Poojappura Ravi.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in his condolence note said Poojappura Ravi’s contribution to the arts was valuable.

Actor Aju Varghese also condoled the death of the actor.

The former health minister of Kerala, KK Shailaja said Poojappura Ravi’s death is a huge loss.
