Malayalam actor Kochu Preman

Popular Malayalam film actor KS Premkumar, popularly known by his stage name Kochu Preman, died at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, 3 December. He was 68.

The actor, remembered for the portrayal of UPP Menon in the film Kalyanaraman or the alcohol government official in Pattabhishekam, was undergoing treatment for lung disease.

Preman had worked in the theatre for around 20 years before debuting in Mollywood with the 1979 movie, Ezhunirangal. He grabbed the attention of the Malayali audience with his second film, Dilliwala Rajakumaran, which was released 17 years after Ezhunirangal.

He acted in more than 130 films in his career spanning 25 years. He adapted to the changing trends with ease and was comfortable working with the new generation of actors.

“I find it comfortable to act with people from the new generation as they act more naturally,” Preman said in an interview.

Although hailed for his comedy roles, Preman had also played character roles with elan. In Rajiv Anchal’s 1997 movie Guru, he played the role of a villain.

Preman’s peculiarity was his dialogue delivery; his skill to shift the pace of dialogues gave him a unique identity, a uniqueness that was perhaps why numerous mimicry artists mimicked him on stage.

Kochu Preman is survived by his wife Girija and son PG Harikrishnan.

Mollywood bids adieu to Preman

The Malayalam film fraternity paid rich homage to the departed actor.

“A tearful farewell to my dear friend,” actor Salim Kumar said in his Facebook post.

“…Kochu Preman chettan…Will be missed big time Chetta.. The time spent with you…the laughters shared with you will remain forever!!” stated Kunchako Boban on Facebook.

“A good actor, beyond that a great human being,” said Manoj K Jayan in his post.

Actor Prithviraj, Aju Varghese, Honey Rose, mimicry artist and director Nadirshah were among those who condoled the demise of the actor.

“Condolences on the death of Kochu Preman. Kochu Preman had an acting career where he performed effortlessly as a comedian and character actor. He came to film acting from theatre and characters that got recognised even at the national level. Condolences to the bereaved family members and colleagues.” wrote Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a Facebook post.
