Vijay Sethupathi had a good year in 2023, as his antagonist role in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan (2023) was appreciated well.

This year, the actor will be seen in Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas, which is all set for release on 12 January or Pongal.

Bollywood diva Katrina Kaif plays the female lead in the Tamil-Hindi bilingual flick.

As part of promoting their upcoming venture, Merry Christmas team addressed the media in Chennai on Monday, 8 January.

During the media interaction, Vijay Sethupathi lost his cool when a reporter asked about doing a Hindi film while the politics of Tamil Nadu was against the imposition of the language.

Interrupting the reporter, the actor recalled, “You asked the same question when Aamir Khan sir was here.”

To this question, the reporter replied, “In Tamil Nadu, we keep getting told that we should not learn Hindi!”

However, an irate Vijay Sethupathi said, “No one said anything of that kind. Nobody told me not to study Hindi. Nobody is stopping anyone from learning Hindi.”

The actor also noted that what was being said was “not to impose Hindi”.

“There is a difference. People are learning Hindi here too,” he clarified and felt that the reporter’s question was unnecessary and irrelevant.

Vijay Sethupathi proved his mettle as a versatile actor in commercial and parallel films.

His performance as a transwoman in the 2020 movie Super Deluxe was well-appreciated.

In a recent interview, the actor spoke about the politics behind the selection of films for the Oscars.

Vijay Sethupathi said he was heartbroken when the Bollywood movie Gully Boy (2019) featuring Ranveer Singh was chosen over Super Deluxe as India’s official entry for Oscars 2020.

The actor claimed that there was “some politics” in choosing films for Oscars.

Super Deluxe, directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, was in the race for India’s official Oscar entry. But the Tamil movie did not enter the official list and lost out to Ranveer Singh and Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy.

During an interaction with his fans, organised by Bollywood Hungama, the actor said, “It’s politics. It’s not because I acted in that movie. Even if I was not in that movie, I wanted it to go there (Oscars). Something happened in between, and I don’t want to talk about that. Now, it’s unnecessary!”
