Vetrimaaran Annapoorani controversy

Nayanthara’s 75th movie Annapoorani has been recently pulled down from the OTT giant Netflix for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus.

The movie was released in theatres on 1 December and received a mixed response. However, the OTT premiere of the film faced a backlash.

The makers of Annapoorani even tendered an apology after a complaint was filed.

Following this, heated debate ensued on social media. However, celebrities kept silent on the controversy.

Meanwhile, Tamil director Vetrimaaran has felt that removing a film, approved by the Censor Board, from OTT platforms due to external pressure is detrimental to the film industry.

He asserted that only the Censor Board holds the authority to permit or deny the screening of a film.

“Pulling films that are censored by the CBFC due to external factors is not good for any film industry. These decisions will put the authority of the CBFC in question,” Vetrimaaran said during a recent media interaction.

Similarly, Malayalam actor Parvathy Thiruvothu expressed her anguish regarding Annapoorani controversy on her Instagram story. She wrote: “A dangerous precedent being set. Censoring left right and ‘centre’ until we won’t be allowed to breathe.”

Hindu sentiments and Love Jihad

Days after the OTT release of Annapoorani, an FIR was filed against the makers of the film for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus.

In his complaint, Ramesh Solanki, a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) spokesperson and former Shiva Sena leader, claimed that Annapoorani “offended the religious sentiments of Hindus”.

Based on Ramesh Solanki’s complaint, the Mumbai Police registered a case against actors Nayanthara and Jai, writer-director Nilesh Krishna, producers Jatin Sethi, R Ravindran, and Punit Goenka, and Zee Studios Chief Business Officer Shariq Patel, and Netflix India head Monika Shergill.

Following this, Annapoorani was pulled down from Netflix.

The police in Maharashtra’s Thane district registered another case against eight persons, including actor Nayanthara, over allegations that certain scenes in Annapoorani had hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus, an official said on 12 January.

In his complaint to the Naya Nagar police station, the 48-year-old complainant, a resident of Mira-Bhayander, said the film also promotes “love jihad”.

Before this complaint was filed, Zee Studios issued an apology to the VHP.

The letter, dated 9 January, read that Annapoorani would be removed from the OTT platform and the objectionable content would be edited.

“We have no intentions, as co-producers of the film, to hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and Brahmins community, and would like to hereby apologise for the inconvenience caused and hurt caused to the sentiments of the respective communities. (sic),” the apology letter read.
