Coolie shooting begins

Rajinikanth’s 171st film, Coolie, was scheduled to go on floors last month. However, it faced delays. On Friday, 5 July, the makers of Coolie confirmed that the shooting began and also shared a new poster.

In the Lokesh Kanagaraj film, Rajinikanth will portray a character with grey shades. Shruti Haasan, rumoured to play his daughter in the film, posted a selfie captioned “Coolie Day 1” on social media, which she later deleted.

Screenshots of the post have since circulated widely. This marks Shruti’s first collaboration with Rajinikanth.

Lokesh Kanagaraj and Shruti Haasan recently worked together on the music video for Inimel, written and produced by Kamal Haasan. Dwarakesh Prabhakar directed the video, where Lokesh and Shruti were seen playing a couple.

Composed and conceptualised by Shruti, Inimel portrays the ups and downs of a modern relationship. Now, Lokesh returns to his usual role, as director.

Coolie features Lokesh Kanagaraj’s regular collaborators—music director Anirudh Ravichander, and stunt director duo Anbariv. The film also stars Sathyaraj, reuniting with Rajinikanth, after 38 years. Both actors shared screen space in Mr Bharath (1986).

It’s speculated that versatile Malayalam actor Shobana will play a pivotal role in Coolie. She previously starred alongside Rajinikanth in Siva (1989), Thalapathy (1991), and Kochadaiiyaan (2014).

Girish Gangadharan—known for his work on Angamaly Diaries (2017), Jallikattu (2019), and Sarkar (2018)—will be the cinematographer for Coolie. This marks his second collaboration with Lokesh after Vikram (2022). Lokesh shared a photo of them, possibly at a dock.

After revealing the title in April, Lokesh Kanagaraj shared an image with Rajinikanth on X last week, announcing that the look test was underway.

The teaser video includes references to Rajinikanth’s previous films, featuring dialogue from his 1982 movie Ranga and a remixed version of the song “Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa” from the 1983 film Thanga Magan.

The director confirmed that Coolie will not be part of his Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), which includes Kaithi (2019), Vikram, and his latest film Leo (2023).

A release date for Coolie is yet to be announced, but it is expected to hit theatres in 2025 in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada.

Lokesh and Chandhru Anbazhagan have written the dialogues and screenplay for Coolie. Further details about the cast are awaited. According to sources, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s next project will be Kaithi 2.

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth awaits the release of Vettaiyan, directed by TJ Gnanavel. The star-studded cast includes Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Dushara Vijayan, and Kishore. The film will hit the screens in October.
