Coolie: Ilaiyaraaja issues notice Sun Pictures

Veteran music director Ilaiyaraaja has issued a legal notice to Sun Pictures for the unauthorised usage of his music in the upcoming Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.

Interestingly, the legal battle comes when the Madras High Court recently mentioned that Ilaiyaraaja can’t claim sole ownership of a musical work.

In the notice, Ilaiyaraaja said Sun Pictures did not seek any formal permission from him before using the music in Coolie, since he is the owner of the music.

The teaser of Coolie had a rendition of his song “Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa” from the film Thanga Magan (1983), which also has Rajinikanth in the lead.

The petitioner said “Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa” was remixed in the song Disco” in Coolie.

In the petition, Illaiyaraaja emphasised that such usage constitutes a clear violation of the Copyright Act (1957).

He also claimed that Lokesh Kanagaraj previously used his compositions in the movie Vikram (2022) without obtaining his consent.

The petitioner demanded that either the producers of Coolie get proper authorisation for the song “Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa” or remove it from the teaser.

The musical maestro also stated that if the producers do not abide by the conditions stated in the notice, they will have to “face serious legal repercussions.”
