As Thalapathy Vijay’s fans eagerly anticipate celebrating their beloved hero’s 50th birthday on 22 June, his films Pokkiri and Thuppakki are scheduled for re-release on 21 June.

Before the re-release of Pokkiri, a new teaser has been unveiled. Less than a minute long, it features rapid cuts between different action sequences.

The action film released in 2007 emerged as a blockbuster of the year and remains one of the most successful movies in Vijay’s career.

Directed by Prabhudheva, Pokkiri, is a remake of the 2006 Telugu movie Pokiri, which featured Mahesh Babu in the lead role.

Pokkiri also stars Asin as the female lead, alongside Prakash Raj, Nasser, Mukesh Tiwari, Vadivelu, Sriman, Anandaraj, and Napoleon in supporting roles. The music for both the original Telugu version and the Tamil remake was composed by Mani Sharma.

The movie centers on Thamizh, a mercenary who undertakes criminal assignments. He is recruited by the international underworld don, Ali Bhai (played by Prakash Raj) to infiltrate the rival gang led by Narasimhan (Anandraj).

As the plot unravels revealing unforeseen twists, it becomes clear that Thamizh’s true identity is more complex than it initially appears.

Vijay’s popularity in Kerala began with Pokkiri and has continued strong to this day.

The 50th birthday of Vijay holds special significance for his fans for several reasons. Having declared his entry into politics, the actor has hinted that his upcoming film, The Greatest of All Time (directed by Venkat Prabhu), which also features Pokkiri director Prabhudheva, could potentially be his final movie.

It’s raining re-releases

This has sparked excitement among fans, who are eager to seize any chance to watch re-releases of Vijay’s past blockbusters. Particularly, noteworthy, was the re-release earlier this year of his 2004 film Ghilli, which received an enthusiastic reception and continues to be one of the highest-grossing films of its year.

Meanwhile, Thuppakki, written and directed by AR Murugadoss, was released in 2012. The film was released alongside Silambarasan’s Podaa Podi and Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan. It premiered on over 1500 screens, marking the widest release for a Vijay film up to that point.

The success of Thuppakki paved the way for further collaborations between AR Murugadoss and Vijay, including Kaththi (2014) and Sarkar (2018).

The dialogue “I am waiting,” delivered by Vijay just before the interval, gained popularity and has since been emulated in the pre-interval scenes of other South Indian films.
