The much-awaited Tamil film Naane Varuvean has hit the screens, and this Selvaraghavan directorial has received mixed reviews from audiences.

Starring Dhanush, Indhuja Ravichandran, Elli, AvrRam, and others in the main roles, the film released in Tamil and Telugu. While it appears to have been received with enthusiasm in Tamil Nadu, where Dhanush is a huge star, it elicited a somewhat tepid response from Telugu audiences, despite all the hype surrounding it. Here is a review.

Identical twins Kathir and Prabhu are like cheese and chalk. While Kathir is sadistic and almost a psychopath in nature, Prabhu is happy-go-lucky and organised. Both these roles are played by Dhanush. Kathir even gives the chills to his parents, who are perhaps the reason he turns out as he does.

Twenty years later, as Prabhu is leading a happy life with his wife (Indhuja) and teenage daughter, everything goes for a toss when he realises that his daughter is behaving abnormally, and sounds scary too.

She often talks to a non-existing, imaginary friend, who tells her that her father will be killed. Is Kathir back again from the wilderness? Will he ruin Prabhu’s pleasant and normal existence?

Dhanush doesn’t disappoint

Dhanush is a versatile actor, no doubt on that count. Anyone who watched Thiruchitrambalam earlier this year will not find it easy to forget his performance in that beautiful love story.

Naane Varuvean will definitely make you fall in love with Dhanush the actor all over again. Given his versatility, Dhanush plays the two shades of Prabhu and Kathir with aplomb, especially as he has already done it in a film like 3.

Playing Kathir, Dhanush let’s his eyes do the talking, and he his almost perfect with his body language. He definitely gives you chills with his performance as Kathir in this film, which could have been great but for the fact it has been let down by the screenplay.

Indhuja, and Elli AvrRam have delivered good performances and lived up to their respective characters.

A great idea, a letdown

Selvaraghavan has definitely come up with an idea that is quite interesting and gripping, but has slipped up with the screenplay and narration, both if which mar the film. The narration of the film could have been a lot better and the characters of both Kathir and Prabhu a lot more elaborate.

The production qualities of the film a great and it is visually captivating.

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background music lifts the story and elevates each and every scene. More than the script which claims to be gripping, it’s the music that gives you the high.

On the whole, Naane Varuvean is worth watching once if you are a Dhanush fan.
