Mai aka Mahendar (Sumanth Prabhas), Bali (Mourya) and Durga (Mani Aegurla) are wayward youth in a Telangana village, Bandanarsampally. The problematic trio spends days idly without any purpose and is more focused on getting into petty quarrels and nuisance-creating acts rather than on studies or getting jobs.

But an unexpected event which leads to the humiliation of their parents makes them mend their ways and start new, responsible lives. Mai, Bali and Durga start a tent house business and soon turn it successful. On the other side, village head Yella Reddy’s (Muralidhar Goud) daughter Mounika (Saarya Laxman) loves Mai, though her father is against it.

At a time when things seem to be heading towards a happy ending, a fire accident crushes the dreams of these youngsters, and they have to start all over from square one. How these awara-turned-responsible youth overcome the problems in their personal and professional lives and become famous is the crux of the story.

Weak aspects

The story of Mem Famous is a good, the the Telangana setting is authentic. But its screenplay is very loose. A more succinct narration and better treatment would have made it an engaging movie.

Sumanth Prabhas, who plays the lead role, also wrote and directed Mem Famous. He should be appreciated for his multitasking. But if he has to make a mark in the future, he should focus more seriously on his craft. This movie, though entertaining in parts, appears like a short film or like Youtube content in many scenes.

The performances

Almost all the actors who appear in the movie use Telangana slang and have been popular on YouTube and social media platforms.

Sumanth Prabhas, Mourya, and Mani are adequate in their roles. Anji Mama and Kiran Macha win hearts. Saarya Laxman is okay as the female lead. Muralidhar Goud has got an important role. Gorati Venkanna also appears in a guest role.

Mem Famous is a youthful entertainer shot on a shoestring budget. Cinematographer Shyam Dupati needs to be appreciated for shooting the movie in a decent way and showcasing the Telangana background and mood.

The music by Kalyan Nayak is average. Editor Srujana Adusumilli should have cut the movie short by at least 30 minutes. For the audience, the feeling is of being forcibly made to sit through many scenes as it waits for the movie to get over.

Final take

Mem Famous is a youthful entertainer, which depicts the life of three youths and how they become successful braving all odds. It banks on Telanagana-style comedy which is all the rage now. Can watch it if you have free time, or else give it a try later on OTT.
