Mammootty's Turbo to make its OTT debut on 9 August

Mammootty’s latest superhit film, Turbo, is all set to make its OTT debut on SonyLIV on 9 August. The movie earned ₹70 crore worldwide and ran for 40 days in theatres.

According to reports, the OTT platform grabbed the digital streaming rights of Turbo for a whopping amount. Meanwhile, Zee Malayalam is learnt to have acquired the satellite rights for the Mammootty-starrer. The film is expected to be telecast in September.

Turbo marked the return of Mammootty to commercial mass entertainers after a gap of two years. The veteran actor has been doing content-driven films of late.

Turbo also marked the comeback of director Vysakh, whose previous films Monster (2022) and Night Drive (2022) didn’t do well at the box office.

In an interview, Vysakh said these films were made for the OTT audience, but he was forced to release them in theatres.

Turbo was supposed to hit the screens in June but the makers released it on 23 May, which worked in the film’s favour since it was vacation time in Kerala.

The Malayalam movie gave tough competition to Prithviraj Sukumaran and Basil Joseph’s Guruvayoor Ambala Nadayil and Asif Ali-Biju Menon’s Thalavan.

Turbo review: A one-man show by Mammootty

Highlights of Turbo

Turbo is a big-budget commercial film with its prime focus on fights. The BTS (behind-the-scenes) video of Mammootty performing high-octane action scenes without a dupe caught the fancy of fans and moviegoers alike.

In the film, Mammootty appears as a saviour of other characters, a typical format adopted in a hero-centric film. Needless to say, it was a cakewalk for the actor.

Turbo featured Raj B Shetty as Sathivel, a ruthless antagonist. In an interview with South First, the Kannada actor said he enjoyed the shooting process. He said the stunts were difficult but the experienced crew made them easy to execute.

“I worked on the film for 25 days of which 14 days were dedicated to the action scenes. Since I am a flexible person, I didn’t find it problematic to do basic fights. However, the climax part had a lot of stunts, which I did for the first time. While I gave my best, they composed the framework. It was an engaging process,” Raj B Shetty added.

Anjana Jayaprakash was the female lead in the film. She was last seen in her debut, Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum (2023). As Indulekha, she played a key role in Turbo.

Telugu actor Sunil appeared as Auto Billa, a quirky local don.

The film also has Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi’s voice at the tail end, hinting at the possibility of a sequel and his role. Vijay Sethupathi said he lent his voice to Turbo following Mammootty’s request.

Phoenix Prabhu choreographed the action sequences for the film. The thrilling climax portion blew away the minds of audiences in theatres.

The pulsating background score by Christo Xavier elevated the movie to the next level.
