The release date of Prabhas' Kalki 2898-AD might be postponed again

Rebel Star Prabhas’ most-awaited film of the year, Kalki 2898-AD, is facing some rough weather as there are endless speculations revolving around its release.

Producer Ashwini Dutt wanted to ride on the sentiment by releasing the pan-India movie on 9 May, the date which changed his fortunes. Cult classics like Chiranjeevi-starrer Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari (1990) and Keerthy Suresh-starrer Mahanati (2018) were released on the same date.

However, due to the delay in post-production and the Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, the makers are now mulling to postpone the release of Kalki 2898-AD.

The tentative release date could be 30 May or 20 June. The team is still brainstorming on these two options. The idea of choosing a date in July is also under consideration.

Releasing Kalki 2898-AD in June poses challenges due to the release of Kamal Haasan’s much-anticipated Indian 2 on 13 June. However, an official announcement is still pending. Director Shankar, who is preoccupied with his daughter’s wedding, will confirm details about the release date of Indian 2 upon his return.

Given that Kalki 2898-AD stars Kamal Haasan, the makers may avoid a clash with Indian 2. Additionally, since the sequel (Indian 2) has had its release date blocked previously, the Prabhas-starrer needs to adjust. Some analysts suggest that a July release could be problematic as schools and colleges start to reopen.

Only if the ticket prices are increased, it could be financially viable for the makers of Kalki 2898-AD.

If the TDP-Jana Sena Party alliance form the government, there could be chances of hope. If YS Jaganmohan Reddy wins a second term, there may be financial challenges for films like Kalki 2898-AD.

It may be recalled that Salaar: Part 1-Ceasefire received a hike of just ₹50 per ticket. It’s not sure if Kalki 2898-AD will get a similar ticket hike permission from the Andhra Pradesh government.
