Titles — superstars, power stars, megastars, and challenging stars — attached to the names of “star heroes” down South is a phenomenon by itself. Amidst such a scenario, Arjun Reddy (2017)-fame Vijay Deverakonda chose a rather unique or peculiar superlative compared to his peers in the industry — “The Vijay Deverakonda”.

What does “the” refer to or signify? Vijay Devarakonda himself explained the logic behind the choice of such a superlative: “I love the name my parents gave me. Before I would be tagged as a ‘Rowdy Star’ or a ‘South Sensational Star’, I chose to be simply called ‘The Vijay Deverakonda’. It means that I am ‘only one’ — Vijay Deverakonda, the name which I love the most.”

He was addressing the trailer launch of his upcoming film Kushi in Hyderabad on Wednesday, 9 August. The film, starring himself in the lead alongside Samantha, is set for release on 1 September.

Mythri Movie Makers, which produced Kushi, is looking forward to bankrolling other language movies, too, including Kannada.

Talking about the present trend of pan-Indian films, the actor observed that it was not a new thing.

“Whenever epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharatha are told and retold on the screen, audiences across borders/languages loved them. But now, crossing borders (language) became much easier. I feel privileged and lucky to be part of the industry at a time when it is being perceived as Indian cinema rather than being differentiated as Bollywood and South film industry,” he remarked.

On marriage

His latest film Kushi directed by Shiva Nirvana deals with love, marriage, and the challenges in a relationship.

Vijay recalled that he would run away at the very mention of the word “marriage” a few years ago.

“However, I think I started liking the idea of marriage and I am alright with it now. I am liking both the beautiful part and also the difficult part by looking at other’s experiences,” he said.

Asked if he would soon tie the knot, he replied, “Yes, I’m now ready for marriage but not for another two years. I hope to have a happy married life.”

Asked about the difficult times his co-star Samantha was going through personally, during the shooting of Kushi, Vijay stated that they finished shooting half the film when the actress came out in public about her health condition.

They thought of doing something else while they waited for Samantha to rejoin the team and conclude the rest of the shoot.

“We wrapped up half the shooting of Kushi. It was then that a thought of flash-forwarding to 10 years later struck me. The idea was to depict how the two characters evolve over a period of time,” Vijay Deverakonda explained.

Acting in other languages

About taking up other language projects, the actor said, “It would be a terrible idea for me to act in a non-Telugu film since I still do not have a good hold on any other language. Once I feel that I have enough knowledge and that I can speak fluently, I would take it up. But definitely not now.”

Well then, how about dubbing his voice for pan-Indian projects? Vijay quipped, “If the audience loves my voice so much that they want to hear me in all other languages, I would make some arrangements but won’t reveal how it has been done.”
