Prabhas Telugu cinema

Actor Prabhas is undoubtedly the most-loved star in Telugu cinema, even after his craze surpassed beyond borders with Baahubali 1 & 2 (2015 & 2017).

The reason that made him everyone’s “Darling” is his unpretentious nature off the screen and the straight-from-the-heart hospitality that he offers to his industry friends and his fans.

As he celebrates his birthday on Monday, 23 October, here is the recap of the movies that defined his 20-year magnificent career in the industry.

Before winning universal accolades for Baahubali, Radhey Shyam, or Adipurush, here’s the list of films that formed the base for his career to take off.

Although his first two movies didn’t make any impact at the box office, audiences connected with the roles that Prabhas portrayed in them.

Eeswar

This 2002 romantic-action drama starring Prabhas and Sridevi Vijaykumar in the lead roles, had set the ball rolling in Darling’s career in Telugu cinema.

As a debutante, Prabhas played the role Eeswar of a gudumba seller’s son living in the slums of Dhoolpet.

The drama begins when he loves a rich girl, Indu. Later, he realises that Indu’s father is an MLA. How the entire community in Dhoolpet supports him in his triumph to save true love against money and political power – forms the crux of Eeswar.

Though Eeswar had a routine mix of commercial elements, this poor-boy-rich-girl love story with Prabhas’ fight-for-underdog tone caught up well with the audiences.

Directed by Jayanth C Paranjee, the story of Eeswar was written by Paruchuri Brothers and produced by Kolla Ashok Kumar.

Raghavendra

A follow-up of Eeswar, Raghavendra (2003) featured the actor in two different shades.

First, Raghavendra remains a silent spectator to the violence around him and wears a rudraksha and vibhuthi to appear in saffron robes.

Second, how was he in the past as a hot-blooded restless youngster Raghava — an intolerant citizen who stands up against the wrongs in society, thus eventually landing his family in trouble?

Directed by Suresh Krishna and written by Posani Krishna Murali, Raghavendra starred Anshu and Shweta Agarwal as the female leads.

The movie didn’t prove him well enough as a popular star in Telugu cinema until Varsham.

Varsham

This love tale, of an unemployed youngster Venkat (Prabhas) and a middle-class girl Sailaja (Trisha), rewrote the industry records.

The story of Varsham starts with both meeting on a train journey and they immediately get attracted to each other. This is when politician Badranna’s sight (Gopichand) falls on her.

Amidst twists and turns, how this triangular love story moves further is the story in short.

Audiences raved about the song sequences when protagonist Venkat keeps bumping into Sailaja every time it rains.

In a way, Varsham brought more laurels to Gopichand than Prabhas for the portrayal of the dreadful character Badranna.

Prakash Raj, who played the role of Ranga Rao — Sailaja’s father, too was praised by audiences and critics.

Varsham was an industry hit with fabulous box office collections in 2004.

Chatrapathi

Chatrapathi (2005) is another defining film in Prabhas’ career in Telugu cinema.

This SS Rajamouli directorial catapulted the image of Prabhas from an actor to a star of Telugu cinema as audiences and his fans that he amassed with Varsham started comparing him with the other stars from the big league.

Chatrapathi is an underdog story of refugee Sivaji (Prabhas).

From the coast of Sri Lanka, he lands on the shores of Visakhapatnam after getting separated from his mom’s boat. How does he grow up as a force to reckon with in the port area after killing a rowdy Baji Rao? How does he get united with his mother? — is the story.

The film was a box office hit in Tollywood with record collections.

Mr Perfect

A Dasarath directorial, Mr Perfect (2011) had put Prabhas in the limelight in Telugu cinema for not being a commercial hit at the box office.

The story is about Vicky (Prabhas) who lives in Australia and runs a business of gaming software company. He believes in a principle that he has adhered to since his childhood — one should never change one’s characteristics or personality to get along with his/her partner.

Meanwhile, his parents arrange a wedding with a girl named Priya (Kajal Aggarwal) who happens to be his childhood friend and a doctor by profession.

Would Vicky change his set of rules when it comes to marriage? What’s the story after he lands in India? — form the crux of Mr Perfect.
