Production designer-art director Ajayan Chalissery in Kodaikanal for Manjummel Boys shoot

Manjummel Boys has become the highest worldwide grosser in the Malayalam film industry by collecting over ₹175 crore.

It is now marching towards the coveted ₹200 crore.

Upon its release, the film received a positive response from audiences and critics.

The tremendous success of Manjummel Boys in Tamil Nadu underscored the fact that language is no barrier to a good film.

The project received wide appreciation for its theme of friendship.

Further, the way director Chidambaram used the popular”Kanmani Anbodu” song from Kamal Haasan’s iconic flick Guna (1991) to convey bonding among friends also helped it grab attention.

The Guna Caves in Kodaikanal were the driving force for the 11 friends who visited the spot and encountered a tragedy.

People who watched the flick in the initial days thought the film was shot in the original Guna Caves. The mind-blowing set was erected by production designer-art director Ajayan Chalissery.

Ajayan Chalissery previously worked in films like Parava (2017) and Trance (2020).

Before the release of the movie, cinematographer Shyju Khalid announced that art director Ajayan Chalissery would be the unsung hero of Manjummel Boys. This came true as the audience was awestruck by the Guna Caves Ajayan Chalissery had recreated for the flick.

It took several months for the production designer-art director to prepare the set for the movie. The Guna Caves were recreated inside a huge godown in Perumbavoor in the Ernakulam district of Kerala.

On Wednesday, 13 March, Ajayan Chalissery posted a selfie pic on his social media handles against the backdrop of the godown.

In his post, he wrote that the selfie was taken on the first day of the work of Guna Caves in the godown. He mentioned that the godown in Perumbavoor was all set to become the Devil’s Kitchen (aka Guna Caves).

The post received appreciation from his followers for his brilliant artwork in the movie.

Several netizens admitted that they did not think that the caves were not real while watching the film.

According to Ajayan, it was difficult to enter the Guna Caves as they were dingy. Only the crew was allowed to enter the caves for five minutes to take pictures.

Director Chidambaram said some of the crew, including him, were allowed to enter the caves much before the tourists arrived at the spot. An experienced forest guard accompanied them.

The making video of Manjummel Boys showcased the sets of Guna Caves and the actors were seen running. The set also had an air conditioner installed for the cooling effect. Also, ice cubes were placed on the sets to make the place even cooler for the actors so they could portray despair and pain, Chidambaram added.
