Pa Ranjith, Gautam Menon, and Anurag Kashyap unite in praise for 'Manjummel Boys'

Malayalam director Chidambaram’s latest outing, Manjummel Boys, has entered the ₹100-crore club recently.

The film, based on a real-life incident in 2006, not only became a blockbuster hit in Malayalam but also gave a new lease of life to the theatres in Tamil Nadu that have not seen any business since Pongal.

The references to the Tamil cult movie Guna (1991) and actor Kamal Hassan were the selling points for Manjummel Boys in Tamil Nadu.

Apart from the collection, the film also garnered accolades from the directors across languages.

Director Gautham Vasudev Menon took to X on Wednesday, 6 March, to share that the Malayalam movie was a theatrical experience.

He wrote: “Such a theatrical high experience film, a connect to the magic that cinema is. So nicely done, boys. When ‘Manidhar unarndhu kolla’ comes up on the soundtrack, somehow watching Guna on opening day so many years ago and many times after that made sense to me.”

Similarly, director Pa Ranjith praised the flick for being straightforward with no extra songs.

He also highlighted that the film established an emotional bond with the audience by featuring just one song at the beginning and incorporating it again in the climax.

‘Hindi cinema can only remake’: Anurag Kashyap

Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap took to Letterbox to share his views about the Malayalam films Manjummel Boys and Bramayugam.

About the Manjummel Boys, he wrote: “Simply extraordinary piece of confident mainstream filmmaking. So much better than all the big-budget filmmaking in India. Such confidence, such impossible storytelling. I was wondering how does one even sell this idea to a producer.”

Praising the Malayalam industry further, he said, “In Hindi, they can only do remakes of such ideas. Hindi cinema really is so far left behind with three back-to-back brilliant Malayalam films..”

In another review, where he rewatched the film, he added: “Camerawork .. editing, performances, the bloody conviction of the filmmakers.”

Anurag Kashyap also reviewed the Mammotty-starter Bramayugam.

About it, he wrote: “I am just so jealous of Malayalam filmmakers .. the courage, the audacity and the amazing discerning audience of Kerala that empowers the filmmaking. I am so insanely jealous .. and Mammooty .. what has he done .. next on the list is Kaathal…”

Kaathal-The Core (2023), starring Mammootty and Jyothika was directed by Jeo Baby. The film focuses on the issues faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, with Mammotty playing the role of a closeted gay man.
