Rajinikanth and Sathyaraj in a still from Mr Bharath

For quite some time, there have been rumours that Sathyaraj and Rajinikanth experienced a rift during the 1990s, leading them to stop collaborating after their blockbuster film Mr Bharath (1986).

Sathyaraj’s heated remarks directed at Rajinikanth during the protest against the Karnataka government led to speculation about their equation and working relationship.

However, Sathyaraj has publicly stated that there are no issues between him and Rajinikanth.

In a recent interview, Sathyaraj revealed that he was supposed to share screen space alongside Rajinikanth in Sivaji: The Boss (2007) and Enthiran (2010). However, he had to reject those two two films, as he believed, they didn’t offer enough meat for him to say “yes”.

“After transitioning from villain roles to a hero, I was offered roles in two Rajinikanth films. I found neither of the roles satisfying. Apart from that, what issues do we have?”

Sathyaraj and Rajinikanth are finally teaming up for Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie, after 38 years.

They were last seen in the 1987 drama, Manathil Urudhi Vendum, directed by the renowned filmmaker K Balachander.

In the movie, both actors made a brief appearance, in a song sequence alongside Suhasini. It was more of a cameo for a single shot, though.

While the production team has not yet officially confirmed Sathyaraj’s involvement in the project, the senior actor disclosed the information during the promotion of Mazhai Pidikatha Manithan, which will be released soon.

When asked about his character in Coolie, Sathyaraj opted not to reveal further information, deferring to the discretion of the makers.

The Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial marks the 171th film of Rajinikanth. Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music for the movie, which is bankrolled by Sun Pictures.

Coolie will go on floors on 10 June.

Other than this, it is rumoured that Sathyaraj is part of Salman Khan’s Sikander under the direction of AR Murugadoss.

Meanwhile, Sathyaraj is awaiting the release of Weapon on 7 June.
