Viveka murder case: CBI court extends judicial remand of 6 accused, including Bhaskar Reddy

A special court for CBI cases in Hyderabad on Friday, 16 June, extended the judicial remand of half a dozen accused, arrested in connection with the murder case of former Andhra Pradesh MP YS Vivekananda Reddy.

The CBI produced the accused before the court, which remanded them to judicial custody till 30 June. The accused were later lodged in the Chanchalguda prison in Hyderabad.

Bhaskar Reddy among the accused

YRSCP MP YS Avinash Reddy’s father YS Bhaskar Reddy was among the six persons whose remand has been extended.

The other five accused include Yerra Gangi Reddy, Sunil Yadav, Uma Shankar Reddy, Devi Reddy Siva Shankar Reddy and Uday Kumar Reddy.

A few days ago, the court rejected the bail petition of Bhaskar Reddy.

On Thursday, Avinash Reddy called on his father at Chanchalguda prison and enquired about his health. He met his father during “mulakath” permitted by the authorities in the prison.

The CBI arrested Bhaskar Reddy on 16 April in Kadapa following his alleged role in Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case and since then lodged in Chanchalguda prison.

Bhaskar Reddy is charged under Sections 120B (Conspiracy), Murder (302) and 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly playing a crucial role in the case.

The premier investigating agency also arrested Avinash Reddy recently in the same case and later released him on bail.

Case in a nutshell

Vivekananda Reddy, popularly known as Viveka, was an MLA of Pulivendula Constituency in 1985 and 1994, and a Member of Lok Sabha from Kadapa Parliamentary Constituency in 1999 and 2004.

He was a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council in 2009. He served as minister of agriculture and member of the Parliamentary Committee on Science and Technology, Environment & Forest constituted by the Union government in the year 2005.

He was found murdered in the bathroom of his house in Pulivendula in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh on the intervening night of 14-15 March, 2019, just weeks before the general and Assembly elections.

After the murder, the police registered an FIR in Pulivendula Urban Police Station with crime number 84/2019 initially under Section 174 Cr.Pc based on the complaint of MV Krishna Reddy, who was the Personal Assistant of the deceased and subsequently the Section of law was altered to 302 IPC.

As many as three Special Investigation Teams (SIT) set up by the then-state government probed the case, which was later taken over by the CBI.

YS Vivekananda Reddy was the brother of late YS Rajasekhar Reddy, former chief minister of united Andhra Pradesh and father of current Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Accused No 8 in the case, Avinash Reddy is also a nephew of Viveka.
