In an effort to make students in Andhra Pradesh globally competitive and seize every opportunity to improve employment prospects, the government, on Thursday, 20 July, constituted a high-level working group of five industry partners — NASSCOM, C-DEP, Amazon, Intel, and Google — to prepare the unique FutureSkills Digital Certification.

The representatives of the high-level committee had met Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to discuss the proposal and presented the roadmap for the design and execution of the FutureSkills Digital Certification.

Introducing tech education in schools

The Andhra Pradesh government is embarking on a blueprint to streamline the education system by integrating the digital mode of educational reforms that will provide school children technology-driven skills and prepare them for opportunities driven by cutting-edge technology.

The focus will be on two main stages: One is school education and the other is higher education.

The main objective is to integrate the emerging technologies into the curriculum, teaching methodology, and assessment strategy. The government envisages the integration in the curriculum by next academic year.

The FutureSkills Digital Certification will be industry accepted and globally recognised. It will be introduced as a core subject from Classes 6 to 12.

To develop the curriculum and the lab infrastructure, the government has set up a five-member committee that includes representatives from the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, the State Council of Educational Research and Training, Centre For Digital Economy Policy Research, NASSCOM, and an independent expert.

A cadre of “Future Skill Experts” will be recruited and trained.

Meeting with CM Jagan Mohan

Interacting with the delegates, the Chief Minister Jagan highlighted how the Andhra Pradesh government is building on its vision to bring in changes and overall educational reforms through the curriculum, teaching methodology, and assessments.

“The adoption of digital technology in the education system will ensure future readiness, therefore, it is the need of the hour to make students digitally fluent. Up until now, there have been gaps in the educational reforms that we have been addressing.

“The need to revamp the curriculum’s alignment by further boosting in verticals in higher education courses/education major is one such area that requires attention.

“This can be accomplished through digital education — execute teaching and learning using augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) mode. The government is already in the process of equipping digital classrooms by December 2023 through installation of Interactive flat panels and Smart TVs across 63,000 classrooms.”

He also stressed on the need to bring in changes in assessment practices and said it should change to meet international standards, incorporating critical and analytical thinking, such as the IB curriculum.

“Apart from this, we are moving forward to enter into an agreement with Educational Testing Services (ETS) for the examination and certification of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to assess English language skills from Classes 3 to 12 in all government schools and colleges,” he said.

He added, “Traditional approaches to teaching methods in the fields of Engineering and Medicine require redefinition. We must concentrate on integrating cutting-edge technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics into the curriculum.

“A policy should be developed in both school education and higher education while keeping all of these changes in mind. Our children will be in a position to find employment by the time they graduate if these improvements are implemented.”

High-power working group

Chief Minister Jagan also urged the high-power working group to submit its recommendations on integrating the present school education reforms with higher education, introducing AI and related verticals in curriculum and changing the teaching methods, examination, and evaluation systems at the school and college levels.

Addressing the working group members at his camp office, the chief minister called upon them to prepare an action plan by the next meeting.

Aiming to shape students into global citizens by making them competitive with proper training in emerging and future technologies, the chief minister constituted the working group last month to make necessary recommendations.

It consists of senior officials and representatives of global tech companies like Google, Microsoft, NASSCOM, Dataviv Technologies, and Primus Partners India.

“As part of the reforms in higher education, we need to work on including augmented reality, virtual reality, and related subjects into the curriculum, and introducing necessary verticals like AI in every course in a majority of the schools and colleges for turning our students into experts of various emerging technologies,” he told them, stressing on the need to train the faculty so that they have expertise of teaching these subjects.

While taking up these reforms on a large scale, school and higher education systems also should be integrated along the curriculum, he said.

“If these subjects are taught to one generation of students, it will continue further and we can produce necessary experts in emerging and future technologies so that our students can compete globally,” he added.
