A giant tamarind tree with thousands of birds nesting in it was chopped for NH-66 expansion at Edavanna in Malappuram district, Kerala on 2 September. The video went viral and received furious criticism from netizens. The sudden collapse of the tree gave little time for the birds to fly away. The JCB driver, the man who cut the tree, and the contractor was taken into police custody. The forest officials visited the spot and recorded the statement of the locals.
