A Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) directive to milk federations in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to label curd as dahi led to outrage with allegations of Hindi imposition by the BJP-ruled central government.

While Tamil Nadu said no, Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) followed it.

FSSAI directive had asked milk federations to use the local nomenclature like ‘mosaru’ or ‘tayir’ in brackets beside dahi.

While Tamil Nadu chief minister said such unabashed insistence on Hindi was an attack on one’s mother tongue, former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said such imposition was unacceptable.

Kannada groups opposed the move and threatened protests. Following the furore, FSSAI withdraw its order.
