Synopsis: Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has allocated portfolios to the 19 Ministers inducted on 3 August, nine days after the Cabinet expansion. The allocation, notified by Governor Thaaawarchand Gehlot on Wednesday, also includes changes to portfolios held by existing Ministers ahead of the Legislative Assembly’s Monsoon Session.
Nine days after expanding his Cabinet, Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has allocated portfolios to the 19 Ministers sworn in on 3 August, alongside a minor rejig of portfolios previously assigned.
The allocation, which comes a day before the Monsoon Session of the Legislative Assembly is set to begin on Thursday, takes effect immediately.
Governor Thaaawarchand Gehlot issued the notification on Wednesday, 12 August under Article 166(3) of the Constitution read with Rule 5 of the Karnataka Government (Transaction of Business) Rules, 1977.
The delay since the 3 August swearing-in, which took the strength of the Council of Ministers to 33, just one short of the sanctioned limit, had left the new Ministers without clarity on their departments amid Shivakumar’s meetings with the high command over a potential minor reshuffle, possibly to include a woman Minister.

The Chief Minister has retained Finance, Cabinet Affairs, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, Intelligence, Information, Law, Justice and Human Rights, Parliamentary Affairs and Legislation.
Shivakumar has also kept Agriculture Marketing, the Commissionerate of Town & Country Planning, all urban local bodies falling under the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) and Bengaluru Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) areas, and all unallotted portfolios.
The allocation also reshuffles portfolios that had been distributed on 4 June.
KH Muniyappa, who was earlier given Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, has been assigned Social Welfare. Ramalinga Reddy, who was earlier given Major and Medium Irrigation, has been assigned Forest, Ecology and Environment.
UT Khader has been given additional charge of Minority Welfare and Haj & Wakf, alongside Health and Family Welfare.
