IT and Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao on Thursday, 9 February, refuted Congress member D Sridhar Babu’s allegation in the Assembly that quite a number of farmers had lost their lands because the government was not inclined to rectify the defects in the Dharani portal software.

Taking a serious exception to Sridhar Babu’s insinuations after the House assembled in the morning for a debate on budget demands, KTR dared him to prove one allegation.

He added that it had become a practice for the Congress to level baseless charges and make irresponsible comments against the state government.

KTR also recalled TPCC president A Revanth Reddy saying that he did not care even if Maoists blew up Pragathi Bhavan and wanted the Congress leaders to introspect whether they were in consonance with the established canons of democracy.

KTR asked Sridhar Babu to apologise if he fails to substantiate his allegations of farmers losing their lands because of the defects in the Dharani portal.

The Congress was trying to magnify even minor glitches in the portal as major problems only to defame the government, KTR stated.

All hail Dharani

Legislative Affairs Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy supported KTR by saying that as many as 24 lakh farmers were happy over the commissioning of the Dharani portal.

Prashanth Reddy recalled the ordeal the farmers went through during the Congress regime and advised Sridhar Babu to give constructive and actionable suggestions to the government.

Prashanth Reddy said that if farmers possessed Dharani passbooks, they could easily raise loans from any bank.

He added that no farmer was facing any difficulty because of the state government shifting to the Dharani portal for all land transactions, which are now happening in just a matter of half an hour.

While he acknowledged that there might be some glitches in the software, most of which have been addressed over a period of time, he assured that any remaining issue would be addressed soon.

He pointed out that the prohibited list issue had been solved village-wise and now there are no problems at all. He said that, in the past, there were a few complaints that some farmers’ lands were included under the prohibited list.

Earlier, Sridhar Babu, said that the Dharani portal has become a curse for farmers as it has several defects. Several farmers had lost their lands because the portal did not show them as owners of the land.

He said that it was necessary that immediate action be taken to rectify all the defects in the portal in the interest of the farmers. He added that about four farmers had ended their lives after their lands were included in the prohibited list.

Question hour

Answering questions raised by legislators during Question Hour, KTR said that the government is considering bringing forth a legislation that applies to all religions for relocating places of worship that were creating problems in the free flow of vehicular traffic.

He said that the government was doing its best to end the traffic problem in the city. Under the second phase of the State Rural Development Plan (SRDP), the government would take up 36 more road projects in Hyderabad.

On the issue of privatisation of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL), he said that under no circumstances would the government allow it to go into private hands. The Centre was trying to offer the SCCL on a platter to those who are in its good books, he charged.

The minister said that the BJP government was favouring Gujarat but was discriminating against Telangana when it came to the allotment to coal blocks.

He said the Centre has gone back on its promise regarding the setting up of a steel plant in Bayyaram.

He added that the Center was spreading rumours that Bayyaram’s iron ore is of poor quality. “If the Centre does not come forward, the state would set up a plant on its own or ask the SCCL to set up one,” he said.
