Konatham Dileep served as the digital media director for the Telangana government during the previous BRS regime.
Synopsis: The BRS leader and former Telangana Digital Media Director Dileep Konatham has accused the Union government of fiscal discrimination against Telangana, citing Rajya Sabha data that shows the State contributes far more in taxes than it receives in return. He further noted that the NDA-ruled Andhra Pradesh received nearly the same amount as it contributed in the same period.
Former Telangana Digital Media Director Dileep Konatham on Thursday, 4 December, accused the BJP-led Union government of fiscal discrimination, citing figures tabled in Parliament that show the State’s tax contributions far outweigh the funds it receives in return.
“Telangana is being blatantly discriminated against by the Union BJP Govt!” he wrote in a post on X.
According to the figures, he said Telangana contributed ₹4.32 lakh crore to the Centre in various taxes over the last five financial years, amounting to 3.87 percent of India’s total tax collections between 2020-21 and 2024-25.
In contrast, the State received only ₹1.84 lakh crore, or 2.45 percent, through fiscal transfers, centrally sponsored schemes and grants.
This gap amounts to a net loss of over ₹2.48 lakh crore for the State, strengthening the suspicion that Telangana is being “penalised” despite being a high-performing economy.
Comparing the figures with Andhra Pradesh, he said that during the same period the neighbouring State contributed ₹3.32 lakh crore, amounting to 2.97 percent of national tax revenue, but received ₹3.23 lakh crore, amounting to 4.30 percent of total funds devolved to States, almost a one-to-one return.
“While we did not have any issue with AP getting more devolution, we think Telangana’s share is unfair, unjust and completely unacceptable. Telangana deserves its rightful share in tax devolution,” he added.
