Telangana Congress is heading for trouble again. The Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) of the TPCC on Wednesday, 12 April, issued a show cause notice to AICC Programmes Implementation Committee Chairman Alleti Maheshwar Reddy, asking him to explain within one hour why no action should be taken against him for “moving closer to BJP”.

The TPCC DAC issued the notice after reports began doing the rounds that Maheshwar Reddy was planning to join the BJP.

Notice sent to Maheshwar Reddy

Though the Nirmal leader held a meeting with his party workers and later said that he had an invitation from both the BJP and the BRS, he, however, did not mention whether he was joining either of the two parties. He had only said that he would take a call later.

As Maheshwar Reddy is showing all the signs of making an exit from the party, TPCC DAC Chairman G Chinna Reddy, in a letter to him, said, “The Disciplinary Action Committee of the TPCC has received numerous complaints from Congress party functionaries with regard to your anti-party activities. They have also complained that you are moving closer to BJP and passing scathing remarks against the leadership of the state Congress Committee.”

Chinna Reddy further said, “You are directed to submit your explanation within an hour from the receipt of the notice, failing which it would be construed that you have no explanation to offer and stern action would be initiated against you, as per the norms and guidelines of Congress party organisation regarding your anti-party activities.”

‘Will decide after meeting party president’

After the issue of the notice, Maheshwar Reddy flew into a rage against the DAC, contending that it had no powers to issue him such notices as he was the chairman of the AICC Programmes Implementation Committee.

He said that it pained him to learn that the party should treat him so shabbily after being loyal for years.

“I do not know why the notice was issued to me. I have been working as a sincere party worker for the last 13 years. Were there any allegations of corruption against me?” he asked.

He said that he would decide on his next step after meeting party president Mallikarjun Kharge and explaining the goings-on in the TPCC.

He said that some forces are creating a situation where he himself would quit the party. He said that he had not criticised the TPCC chief A Revanth Reddy’s leadership and that he had never contemplated switching loyalty to another party.

Keeping a low profile

Maheswar Reddy, who took out a padayatra from Boath to Gandhibhavan recently, had to call it off after the intervention of party Telangana in-charge Manikrao Thakre.

This had hurt him as he suspected forces inimical to his interests in the party were working against him.

He had been keeping a low profile since then and recently, he held a meeting with party workers and sought their opinion about which party is a better bet for him.

As most of them told him that the BJP was better than the BRS, he said he would consider the advice but did not announce any decision.
