Ringing down the curtain on speculation that he might soon be quitting the Congress, Bhuvanagiri MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy on Thursday, 6 April, said there was no iota of truth in the campaign against him.

“There is no truth in it. If I take a decision to join another party, I will declare it openly. I have been in Congress for the last 33 years. The reports that I might be leaving the party are creating confusion among party workers who have pinned their hopes on me. If I really wanted to leave the party, I would have done it when I was denied the position of PCC President,” he said.

He recalled taking part in the protest at Gandhi Bhavan against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as MP a few days ago. “I conferred with party in-charge Manikrao Thakre. If the party asks me, I will contest in either Lok Sabha or Assembly elections,” he said.

Butting heads with Revanth Reddy

Venkat Reddy was offering a clarification on reports that he was going to don saffron robes or that he might even start a party of his own in the wake of the hostile atmosphere prevailing in the Congress for him.

Venkat Reddy has remained a fly in the ointment for TPCC chief A Revanth Reddy. Venkat Reddy, who opposed the lateral entry of Revanth Reddy into the Congress from the TDP, had opposed his elevation as party president.

When the party high command ignored his pleas against Revanth Reddy, Venkat Reddy fell out with a section of the party leaders and began encouraging dissident activity.

In fact, in the by-election for Munugode, he had campaigned for his brother Rajagopal Reddy, who was in the fray on a BJP ticket, which made the party issue a show-cause notice to him. In the peak of campaigning in Munugode, he left India to holiday in Australia.

‘It’s water under the bridge now’

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Venkat Reddy said that though he made some stinging comments against the party’s high command in the past, he had mended fences subsequently.

“I met party matriarch Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi, and daughter Priyanka and explained to them the circumstances under which I made the comments. Now, there is no longer any ill will. It is all water under the bridge,” the parliamentarian said.

He, as an afterthought, said that he was still seeking an important position in the party. “I’m ready to take any responsibility that the party might deem suitable to me,” he said.

Reason for clarification

What fuelled speculation that he might shift his loyalty to the saffron party were his frequent meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Though he had clarified on each occasion that he met him for funds for various development works in his constituency, doubts lingered.

Further to this, there were the cryptic comments that certain issues discussed with the prime minister cannot be shared with the media.
