Tenders called for ambitious Warangal airport expansion: New terminal and enhanced connectivity to drive regional growth
The ₹2,034.98-crore project introduces 15 new routes and a state-of-the-art terminal while aiming to position the historic tier-2 city as the primary feeder to the Hyderabad airport.
Tenders have been officially called for a major expansion of the Warangal Airport, marking a decisive step forward in upgrading the facility.
The project, valued at approximately ₹2,034.98 crore, invited expressions of interest from qualified infrastructure developers and aviation specialists for the construction of a new terminal building along with associated infrastructure upgrades.
The move serves as a strong follow-up measure to the airport’s initial establishment and early operations, addressing previous limitations in capacity and flight options while paving the way for smoother travel and greater regional integration.
With a focus on modern facilities, the new terminal will feature upgraded infrastructure, including advanced navigation systems, efficient passenger handling areas, retail and dining zones, and sustainable design elements that align with contemporary airport standards. The tender process is expected to ensure the selection of experienced partners capable of delivering world-class aviation infrastructure within stipulated timelines.
Central to the project is the addition of 15 new routes, which will connect Warangal to key destinations across the country. This enhanced network is anticipated to support around 29 daily flights in the initial phase, offering greater convenience for business travellers, tourists, students, and residents.
The improved connectivity is particularly significant for a historically rich city like Warangal, home to architectural marvels such as the Warangal Fort, the Thousand Pillar Temple, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Ramappa. Easier air access is likely to attract a surge in visitors, breathing new life into local tourism.
The economic ripple effects of the expansion are expected to be far-reaching. The project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs in aviation, hospitality, logistics, retail, and related sectors. Local businesses stand to benefit from increased passenger traffic, while the region as a whole could see fresh investments in industries ranging from information technology and pharmaceuticals to textiles and agriculture. By positioning Warangal Airport as a viable alternative and feeder airport to Hyderabad, the initiative aims to promote balanced growth and reduce congestion at the state capital’s air hub.
Community members have expressed optimism about the project, viewing it as a gateway to better opportunities and improved quality of life.
Authorities are emphasising coordinated execution, with attention to timely completion, environmental considerations, and integration of green technologies.
