In a fatal accident, five people, including the wife and the daughter of an Indian Navy officer, were killed and two others suffered injuries in the Narayanpet district of Telangana on Sunday, 24 December, the police said.
The two cars rammed into each other on the NH-167 — nearly 170 km from Hyderabad — around 4.30 pm at Bodulakunta near Jakler village of the Makhtal Mandal.
The Indian Navy officer was identified as Deepak Samal (38), his wife Babitha (33) and their daughter Hashmita (8). They reportedly hailed from Odisha. There were three occupants in Samal’s car and four in the other one.
The police said the initial probe suggested that one of the cars tried to overtake another vehicle but crashed into the other car coming from the opposite direction.
According to the police, Samal and his family members were coming from Karwar city in Karnataka and were headed to Visakhapatnam in their car.
In the other car, Khaleel (46), Moula Ali (41), Rehmania Begum (55), and Madivalappa were reportedly returning to Saidapur in Karnataka from Maharashtra.
Samal’s wife Babitha and daughter Hashmita were killed on the spot, while the occupants of the other car also died on the spot.
“Samal suffered head injuries and was transferred to Military hospital in Hyderabad. He is currently out of danger and is recovering. The other injured person, Madivalappa, is also out of danger,” a police officer of the Makhtal police station told South First.
The impact of the collision was so massive that the bonnets of both cars were mostly destroyed in the accident.
As per reports, there was a significant traffic disruption due to the accident, leading to vehicle congestion. The police relocated the wrecked cars to the roadside to smoothen the traffic flow.
