Telangana targets 140 MU in daily thermal power generation as El Niño threatens hydel output

The Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS) at Damaracherla is expected to play a major role in increasing thermal generation. Four of its five 800 MW units are already generating power, while the fifth unit was synchronised with the grid on 20 October.

Synopsis: Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has directed the Energy Department to raise daily thermal power generation to 140 million units to offset a possible fall in hydel output due to El Niño and meet higher demand during the rabi and summer seasons. Thermal generation from TGGENCO plants averaged 91 million units a day in the current financial year up to 21 October.

Telangana Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has directed the Energy Department to raise daily thermal power generation to 140 million units (MU) to offset a possible drop in hydel generation due to El Niño and meet higher electricity demand during the rabi (yasangi) and summer seasons.

Reviewing the State’s power situation at the Secretariat on Thursday, 22 October, Vikramarka directed officials to prepare a detailed plan to maintain uninterrupted power supply to farmers and households as demand rises.

Officials told the Deputy Chief Minister that thermal power generation from Telangana State Power Generation Corporation (TGGENCO) plants averaged about 91 MU a day in the current financial year up to 21 October, against 76.46 MU a day in the corresponding period last year, an increase of about 19 percent. Generation peaked at 118 MU on 16 October.

The Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS) at Damaracherla is expected to play a major role in increasing thermal generation. Four of its five 800 MW units are already generating power, while the fifth unit was synchronised with the grid on 20 October.

Vikramarka said Coal India Limited would supply coal to two units of the plant from November under a new arrangement. He instructed officials to ensure that all units at the State’s thermal power plants operate at maximum capacity and are monitored continuously.

OTS scheme to recover dues from closed industries

The Deputy Chief Minister also directed officials to draft a One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme to recover pending electricity dues from closed industries.

The chairpersons and managing directors of Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) and Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGNPDCL) were asked to contact the closed industrial units and explain the scheme’s rules and available options.

The proposed scheme is intended to provide relief to eligible industries while helping the distribution companies recover outstanding dues.

Separately, Vikramarka instructed Finance Department officials to recover the dues owed by various government departments to Singareni Collieries Company Limited, GENCO, TRANSCO and other power sector organisations.
