The Telangana High Court on Thursday, 9 July, granted regular bail to Bandi Sai Bageerath, son of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act case registered against him over allegations of sexually assaulting a minor.
Justice K Sujana, who had reserved orders after hearing final arguments on 6 July, allowed the bail petition with conditions at 4.30 pm. A copy of the order was awaited.
In the petition filed on 30 June, Senior Counsel T Niranjan Reddy, appearing for Bageerath, submitted that his client had spent more than 40 days in judicial custody and had fully cooperated with the investigation.
Arguing that the probe was substantially complete, he contended that continued incarceration served no purpose and had disrupted his client’s academic career.
The defence also pointed to Bageerath’s compliance with the conditions of his interim bail and cited Supreme Court precedents in which bail had been granted in cases involving comparable or more serious offences.
Opposing the plea, Public Prosecutor Palle Nageshwar Rao maintained that the investigation was still in progress and that several witnesses, including common friends of the accused and the complainant, were yet to be examined.
He argued that releasing Bageerath at this stage carried a real risk of evidence being tampered with and witnesses being influenced, adding that the political standing of the accused’s father could discourage witnesses from coming forward.
In its counter affidavit filed on 3 July, the Telangana Police alleged that Bageerath had known the minor since 2025 and that the assaults took place on multiple occasions at more than one location in Hyderabad.
The case stems from a complaint lodged on 8 May at the Pet Basheerabad Police Station in Kompally by the mother of a 17-year-old girl, accusing Bageerath of sexually assaulting her daughter.
He was arrested on 16 May after the High Court reserved orders on his anticipatory bail plea. The anticipatory bail petition was subsequently withdrawn, and the High Court directed him to seek regular bail instead.
Bageerath was granted interim bail by the Special POCSO Court in Malkajgiri in late June to appear for supplementary examinations at Mahindra University. He surrendered at Cherlapally Central Prison on 25 June after the interim bail period ended.
