Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Tuesday, October 13, announced a 34 per cent share of profits for permanent employees at the state-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL).

Bhatti also announced a Rs 5,500 bonus for contract workers ahead of the Dasara festival.

Speaking to reporters at the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Praja Bhavan in Hyderabad, the Dy CM, who also holds the Energy portfolio, said the government would issue pending dependent employment orders within 15 days.

The minister said disputes over discrepancies in workers’ names will be settled on humanitarian grounds.

Monthly medical boards will be held at every area hospital for invalidation tests, the minister said, adding that workers who lost their jobs during Covid or due to other local reasons will be reinstated under a one-time option.

The Dy CM said the government has filled 3,189 SCCL posts since taking charge, comprising 752 external recruitments and 2,437 compassionate appointments. He claimed that around 30,000 contract workers are covered under a free accident insurance scheme of ₹40 lakh. He added that Singareni workers also receive ₹1.2 crore in accident cover, a benefit Coal India employees do not have.

Hitting out at the BRS, Bhatti asked why the party failed to open new mines during its ten years in power. He said the Congress government is attempting to secure new coal blocks despite inadequate cooperation from the Centre.

Singareni-run power plant, modern housing colonies for workers

The minister stated that a committee of district collectors and SCCL officials has been directed to submit a list of eligible families within a month so house site pattas (land titles) can be distributed on Singareni land. Additionally, dilapidated D-type quarters will be demolished and replaced with modern units in Nehru Housing colonies, which will be upgraded with improved drainage, sanitation, drinking water, and sewage treatment facilities.

SCCL area hospitals are to be upgraded to corporate standards, featuring specialist doctors as well as cardiac and cath lab services. Free cancer screening will also be conducted in villages across Singareni areas.

The government plans to install solar panels on schools, colleges, hostels, hospitals, and government buildings within the SCCL limits. Bhatti stated that a Singareni-run thermal power plant at Ramagundam has been cleared, fulfilling an election promise.

Bhatti also announced that the SCCL will pay workers’ income tax on their behalf and release pending performance-related pay for its officers. Safety kits will be distributed to workers every six months, he said.

Other welfare and infrastructure measures announced on Tuesday include installing RO water plants at MLAs’ camp offices and government schools, earmarking funds for infrastructure development at government junior colleges in Sathupalli and Bhupalpally, and taking steps to allocate land for an agricultural research centre in Bhupalpally.

Minister D. Sridhar Babu, Energy Secretary Navin Mittal, SCCL CMD Buddha Prakash Jyothi, and several MLAs attended the press conference.
