In what will come as music to the ears of government employees, the Telangana government has enhanced the dearness allowance (DA) from 17.29 percent to 20.02 percent of their basic pay.

The order will come into retrospective effect from 1 July, 2021.

Dearness allowance is a cost-of-living adjustment provided by the government to current public sector employees and pensioners.

Who is eligible

The Finance Department, in a Government Order (GO) issued on Monday, 23 January, said that the revision would be applicable to the employees of zilla parishads, mandal parishads, gram panchayats, municipalities, municipal corporations, agriculture market committees, zilla grandhalaya samsthas, and work-charged establishments, who are drawing salaries in the regular pay scale as per the Revised Pay Scales 2020.

The order is applicable to teaching and non-teaching staff of aided institutions, including polytechnics, as well as teaching and non-teaching staff of universities, who are drawing salaries in the regular pay scale as per the Revised Pay Scales 2020.

Where they will receive it

The arrears on account of payment of revised DA for the period from 1 July 2021 to 31 December 2022 would be credited to their General Provident Fund (GPF) accounts.

However, in the case of employees who are due to retire on or before 31 May 2023, the DA arrears will be paid directly.

This is because employees who are due to retire on superannuation are exempted from making any subscription to their GPF account during the last four months of their service.

The rise will be applicable to the employees who retired from service on or after 1 July 2018, and who are drawing pension as per Revised Pay Scales 2020.
