The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) is busy working on its Minorities’ Declaration. It will be yet another declaration that the Congress will be unveiling to attract various sections of people in the state ahead of the Assembly elections slated for year-end.

The Minority Declaration Committee of the party, at its second meeting on Wednesday, 30 August, constituted various sub-groups to work on the contours of the declaration and interact with stakeholders, an official release from the party said.

The party has already released three declarations, one on farmers by Rahul Gandhi in Warangal (May 2022), one on youth by Priyanka Gandhi (May 2023), and one on SCs and STs by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge (August 2023).

‘Intends to expose failures of BRS’

Mohammad Shabbir Ali, convenor of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) and chairman of the Minorities Declaration Committee said that the party, through the declaration, intends to expose the failures of the ruling BRS government in implementing minorities’ welfare schemes.

“It will also convey that only the Congress party cares for minorities and can ensure their development. The Minorities Declaration will be a comprehensive and visionary document that will cover all aspects of minorities welfare,” he said.

Meanwhile, TPCC senior vice president and the convener of the declaration committee, Zafar Javeed, said that several organisations have already started sharing their suggestions with the committee members.

He said that a dedicated WhatsApp number and email address for sending suggestions to the committee would be shared by Thursday.

“Various sub-groups constituted today (30 August) will start meeting with the heads of religious and social organisations on an immediate basis. This process will be completed in the next three to four days,” he said.

The meeting was chaired by Shabbir Ali, the likely Congress candidate to take on Chief Minister K Chandrashekar rao in his second constituency, Kamareddy.

Others present included, apart from Zafar Javeed, Shaik Abdullah Sohail, Uzma Shakir, Faheem Qureshi, B Ezekiel, Syed Azmathullah Hussaini, Deepak John, and Rashed Khan.

To seek suggestions

The committee finalised a list of leaders and representatives from various religious and social organisations who will be approached in person to seek suggestions for the Minorities’ Declaration. The committee has also formed four to five sub-groups that will meet with these leaders in the next three to four days.

“We have also decided to hold an interactive meeting with various intellectuals, organisations, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to discuss the proposed declaration,” Shabbir Ali said.

“The meeting will be held next week in Hyderabad and will be attended by top Congress leaders. It will be an interactive meeting where we will facilitate individuals and organizations to submit their suggestions directly,” he added.

Shabbir Ali said that prior to the release of the Minorities Declaration, some meetings of the declaration committee would also be held in districts with significant minority populations.

“Our intention is to gather as many ideas and suggestions as possible from the community members,” he said.

“We will be approaching Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, and all other minorities to incorporate their wishes and aspirations in the declaration as well as the manifesto,” he added.
