Synopsis: Telangana Congress leaders B Mahesh Kumar Goud and Ponnam Prabhakar staged a protest at Rail Nilayam in Secunderabad on Wednesday, accusing the Centre of denying trains for party members travelling to Delhi for a November 1 rally against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The party is preparing to mobilise around 10,000 cadres from Telangana for the rally at Ramlila Maidan.
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B Mahesh Kumar Goud and Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar led a protest at Rail Nilayam, the South Central Railway headquarters in Secunderabad, on Wednesday, 28 October, accusing the Centre of denying trains to party members travelling to Delhi for a November 1 rally against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
The party is preparing to take around 10,000 cadres from Telangana to the rally at Ramlila Maidan. The State unit had been holding meetings across districts to coordinate participation, with ministers and senior leaders overseeing preparations alongside district leaders. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had also held meetings with party leaders on arrangements for the programme.
Congress workers in large numbers gathered outside the office of the General Manager at Rail Nilayam and staged a sit-in, raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Police detained several protesting Congress leaders including Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, Rajya Sabha MP Vem Narender Reddy, and several other senior party leaders.
The protesters alleged that trains were being deliberately withheld to prevent the Congress from mobilising its cadre for the 1 November demonstration in Delhi. They blamed the Modi government for obstructing the party’s efforts to transport its members to the rally.
MLAs Naveen Yadav and Sri Ganesh, along with several other senior Congress leaders, took part in the agitation.
The South Central Railway said it received the request at very short notice, leaving insufficient time to complete the necessary operational formalities and inter-zonal coordination required for running a long-distance special train.
