Synopsis: Condemning the house arrest, Ramchander Rao wrote on X: “Democracy is under attack in Telangana. Twice within a week, Congress government has placed me under house arrest – first, to prevent me from meeting protesting students, and now, to stop me from meeting our Nalgonda District President, whose house was ransacked by Congress goons.”
Telangana police on Tuesday, 1 September, placed BJP state chief N Ramchander Rao under house arrest ahead of his scheduled visit to Nalgonda to meet the district president.
Ramchander Rao had decided to visit Nalgonda following the attacks on BJP offices and the Nalgonda district president’s home allegedly by Congress leaders. However, the police prevented him from leaving his house, citing potential law and order issues.
Condemning the house arrest, Ramchander Rao wrote on X: “Democracy is under attack in Telangana. Twice within a week, Congress government has placed me under house arrest – first, to prevent me from meeting protesting students, and now, to stop me from meeting our Nalgonda District President, whose house was ransacked by Congress goons.”
“Democracy is being systematically crushed in Telangana! Wave the Constitution in one hand while trampling upon it when in power, this has been Congress mantra for decades, and we are witnessing the same in Telangana today,” he added.

A heavy police force was deployed at his residence in Tarnaka, Hyderabad. Further, the situation became tense as a large number of BJP activists gathered at the location.

Meanwhile, Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy is also scheduled to visit Nalgonda. Due to which, police were on alert as key leaders from both parties were likely to arrive in Nalgonda around the same time.
On Monday, 31 August, the Youth Congress laid siege to the BJP state office in Hyderabad to protest the BJP’s handling of issues concerning students in Bihar and at Jantar Mantar. Led by Youth Congress President Jakkidi Shiva Charan Reddy, a large number of activists arrived at the BJP office carrying black flags. Police stopped them when they attempted to enter the premises. Subsequently, Congress cadres smeared black paint on the rear gate of the BJP office and burned an effigy of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The situation turned tense following a heated altercation between the police and Youth Congress activists. In retaliation for the protest by Congress cadres at the BJP office in Hyderabad, BJP workers attacked the office of Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy in Nalgonda, leading to a tense situation in the town.
Police have stepped up security to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control amid the ongoing agitations and retaliatory attacks by activists from both parties. Additional police forces have been deployed in sensitive areas of Hyderabad and Nalgonda.
