Telangana police have arrested a 34-year-old bike mechanic for sexual assault and murder of a 21-year-old nurse in Ranga Reddy district. The victim was found dead with severe injuries to her face and body in her residential quarters at Prime Care Hospital in Thukkuguda on Saturday, August 29.
The Pahadishareef police arrested the accused, Md Sanaullah, 34, a native of Bihar, on Sunday evening, the Shamshabad Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) said.
Police have seized a Samsung mobile phone and the accused’s clothes. The DCP said he was apprehended based on “technical evidence and specific information developed during the course of investigation.”
A case has been registered at Pahadishareef Police Station under Sections 103(1), 64(1) and 332(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3(ii)(V) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The case has also led to protests. Local BJP leaders joined the victim’s family outside the mortuary at Osmania Hospital on Sunday and demanded strict action against the accused.
Speaking to the media, the victim’s aunt said:
“Our girl never got into any fights. She always minds her business. Whatever happened must have happened here only. She had severe injuries on her face and body. She was almost unrecognisable.”
The nurse, a native of Bhadradri Kothagudem district and a member of the ST Koya community, had been working at Prime Care Hospital for about seven months. She shared a room with a colleague from her home district in quarters provided by the hospital.
The incident came to light on Saturday afternoon after her roommate became alarmed when she did not report for duty and did not answer calls. After repeated knocking received no response, the room was opened. The nurse was found in a pool of blood with injuries to her face.
Her roommate informed her aunt, who lives in Hyderabad and was her local guardian. The nurse’s mother is a daily-wage worker living in their native village.
According to police, Sanaullah entered the victim’s room through a window at around 12.30 a.m. on Saturday. The nurse woke up and raised an alarm, following which he allegedly covered her mouth and caught her by the throat.
“During the struggle, she bit his left little finger and scratched his throat and left side of the chest,” the DCP said in a statement.
Sanaullah reportedly became enraged after she resisted and assaulted her on the face, pushed her down and strangled her, rendering her unable to resist, before sexually assaulting her.
“After committing the offence, [the accused] closed the window as it were earlier and left the place,” the DCP said.
According to the DCP, Sanaullah had been working and residing at Sri Bhagya Lakshmi Bike Mechanic Shop near Prime Care Hospital on the Srisailam Highway in Thukkuguda.
He came to Hyderabad in 2023 and learnt bike-mechanic work at a shop in Uppal. About two months before the incident, he moved to Thukkuguda and began working at another shop belonging to the same mechanic, police said.
The DCP said Sanaullah was “habituated to consuming alcohol and watching pornographic videos/photos on his mobile phone.”
Police alleged that about a month before the murder, he noticed the nurse through the rear-side window of the mechanic shop.
“He developed a sexual interest in her and started observing her movements,” the DCP said.
According to police, he subsequently learnt that she worked as a nurse at Prime Care Hospital and lived in the hospital’s residential rooms.
“He thereafter allegedly hatched a plan to sexually assault her,” the DCP said.
