Even after being the newest state in India, Telangana — bifurcated from Andhra Pradesh in 2014 — became the state with the second-highest per capita income in the country among the large states in 2023-2024, according to the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) to the Prime Minister.

The per capita income in Telangana is 194 percent compared to the national average, only below Delhi’s 250 percent.

The report titled Relative Economic Performance of Indian States: 1960-61 to 2023-24 said Southern states emerged as top performers in terms of per capita income since the 1990s.

Telangana contributed 4.9 percent of the nation’s GDP while Andhra Pradesh contributed 4.7 percent.

The report added that the southern states together account for 30.6 percent of India’s GDP in 2023-24.

An average person in Telangana now has income level 94 percent higher than the national average, while that of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has 81 percent and 71 percent higher respectively, it said.

The report said Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have grown at quite different rates after the bifurcation, with Telangana’s growth being significantly higher.
