UPC Volt

In a major boost to Telangana’s goal of positioning itself as India’s leading AI data centre destination, UPC Volt — a joint venture between Netherlands-based UPC Renewables Group and VOLT Data Centers — signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a 100 MW AI-ready data centre in the upcoming Bharat Future City. The project will be backed by a matching 100 MW round-the-clock renewable energy facility, ensuring that the digital infrastructure is powered entirely by carbon-free energy.

The proposed investment of ₹5,000 crore will be made over a period of five years and is expected to generate more than 3,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase and over 800 direct and indirect jobs during operations.

The facility will be integrated with renewable energy sourcing under Telangana’s Green Open Access framework, enabling what officials described as a sustainable, power-first operating model for next-generation data centres.

The agreement followed detailed discussions between the Telangana delegation and the UPC Volt leadership, including Han de Groot, CEO, Volt; Steven Zwaan, co-founder, UPC Renewables APAC; Alok Nigam, CEO, UPC Renewables India; and Vikas Sharma, Assistant Vice President, UPC Renewables India.

CM Revanth expresses satisfaction

The joint venture focuses on developing high-performance, energy-efficient AI data centres capable of supporting advanced workloads such as high-density GPUs, large-scale training compute and liquid cooling technologies.

The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction over IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu securing the marquee investment, stating that Telangana’s target of becoming a $3 trillion economy by 2047 will be achieved by building high-calibre digital infrastructure.

“We are aggressively pushing to become a global AI data centre hub. At the same time, sustainability remains non-negotiable,” he said, adding that the state is developing three distinct economic zones dedicated to services, manufacturing and agriculture as part of its long-term strategy.

Schneider Electric to expand in Telangana

In another significant development, global energy management and automation major Schneider Electric India announced plans to invest ₹623 crore to expand its existing facilities at Gagillapur and Shamshabad near Hyderabad.

The expansion will enhance manufacturing capacity for key electrical safety and industrial products, including Air Circuit Breakers (ACB), Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB), contactors and push buttons.

The announcement came after the ‘Telangana Rising’ delegation met Deepak Sharma, CEO, Schneider Electric India, on the sidelines of WEF 2026. Discussions also covered collaboration on energy transition and storage projects, grid modernisation, energy efficiency solutions and digital power management for industrial parks and urban infrastructure.

Welcoming the investment, the Chief Minister said sustainability is a central pillar of Telangana’s development agenda as it pursues a Net-Zero target by 2047. He noted that Telangana has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing electronics manufacturing hubs, spanning consumer electronics, telecom hardware, industrial electronics and advanced electronic systems.

The delegation and Schneider Electric also explored the possibility of expanding smart factory capabilities in the state, particularly in energy management, automation and electric vehicle-related components. Sharma highlighted that Schneider already operates 38 development and skilling centres in Telangana, reinforcing the state’s role as a talent and innovation hub.

Beyond investments

Telangana also used the global platform at Davos to propose a deeper and more continuous engagement with the World Economic Forum. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy met Jeremy Jurgens, Managing Director, WEF, and Manju George, Head of Strategic Impact and Integration, C4IR Network, at the Telangana Pavilion.

He proposed hosting an annual WEF follow-up forum in Hyderabad during July or August to bridge the long gap between successive Davos meetings, citing the fast-paced nature of modern business cycles. Telangana offered to partner with WEF as a strategic host.

The proposal received a positive response from the WEF leadership. Jurgens noted that while “Summer Davos” is currently held in China and there is interest from countries such as Saudi Arabia, WEF would take Telangana’s proposal forward in the near future.

The Chief Minister also presented the Telangana Rising 2047 vision and highlighted the progress of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) Telangana, launched at BioAsia 2024 as WEF’s first thematic centre in India focused on healthcare and life sciences.

Describing C4IR Telangana as a role model, Jurgens said Hyderabad’s strong talent base and the state’s long-term vision open up multiple opportunities for collaboration.

IT and Industries Minister Sridhar Babu elaborated on the state’s new economic strategy and the net-zero Bharat Future City project, while the delegation shed light on Telangana’s strengths in aerospace, defence, life sciences, software and pharmaceuticals, alongside a renewed focus on skilling, electric mobility and renewable energy transition.
