Telangana Assembly polls: With 23 in the bag, SC/ST seats account for over a third of Congress tally

The Congress has won 23 out of the 31 SC/ST reserved seats in Telangana, accounting for more than a third of its overall tally of 64 seats in the 119-member state Assembly

Of the 19 SC reserved constituencies, the Congress emerged victorious in 14, while the BRS won five.

Interestingly, the BJP did not win any of the reserved seats, even though its candidate came second in the Secunderabad Cantonment seat.

Among the 12 ST candidates, the Congress outperformed the BRS by winning nine seats, while the BRS settled for three. Once again, the BJP failed to secure any of the ST reserved seats. However, its candidate in Boath, Adilabad MP Soyam Bapu Rao finished second to the BRS.

Incidentally, though the BRS named the state Secretariat after Dr BR Ambedkar, installed the tallest Ambedkar statue in the world near it, and named a tribal district, Kumaram Bheem, it fared poorly in the SC/ST constituencies.

He gained prominence by organising a People’s March from Madhira to Khammam as part of Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra.

However, in Dharmapuri, Congress veteran Adluri Laxman Kumar, who had previously lost three times to BRS’s Koppula Eshwar (a minister in the KCR government), lost the seat this time.
