Five men held for gang-raping 30-year-old Hyderabad woman in abandoned railway quarters

Five men, including a 19-year-old, were arrested for allegedly raping a 30-year-old woman in Hyderabad, the police said on Monday, 18 December, 11 days after the crime was committed.

The accused have been identified as Barna Yesu (32), Seetha Madhu Yadav (31), Sirigiri Prashanth Kumar alias Milky Boy (20), Pastham Tharun Kumar alias Poori (20), and Keshojuva Rohith alias Takkar Kittu (19).

The police said the case was registered based on a complaint by the survivor’s grandmother.

According to the complaint, the woman was waiting for a bus to Lalapet at Lalaguda when Yesu noticed her around on 7 December night.

He offered her a lift on his two-wheeler, but instead of dropping her off at Lalapet, took her to an abandoned railway quarters at Prashanth Nagar, 16 km away.

The police said he then summoned his associates, and they took turns in violating her. After raping the woman, Madhu Yadav dropped her off at Tarnaka.

A sub-inspector attached to the Lalaguda police station said the woman had left home around 5 pm. “Yesu offered her a lift when she was waiting at the Lalapet flyover near the Ambedkar Statue,” he told South First.

The officer added that the crime was committed at a secluded place between 6 pm and 7 pm.

“Even if she had screamed, nobody would have heard her,” he replied to a specific query.

DCP (East Zone) Sunil Dutt told South First that the grandmother lodged the complaint since the survivor and her mother were in a state of shock.

The survivor was later counselled at the Bharosa Centre, a one-stop support centre for women and child victims of crime. “She is living with her family now,” the officer said.

A case under IPC Sections 363 (kidnapping) and 376-D (gangrape) was registered at Lallaguda police station.

The accused were produced before a sub-divisional magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
