Seven arrested a day after Hyderabad minor girl was gang-raped at home

The girl told the police that eight men barged into her house with knives, and three of them assaulted and raped her.

Calls for arrest grow as 16-year-old minor girl gang-raped in Hyderabad; Telangana Governor seeks report

Seven people were arrested for allegedly gang-raping a 16-year-old at knifepoint at her cousin’s residence in Hyderabad’ Meerpet, the police said on Tuesday, 22 August, a day after the incident.

The Rachakonda police said the girl had on, 19 August, spurned the first accused, Abed-Bin-Khaled’s advances. The gang barged into the house around 11 am on Monday, 21 August.

The girl told the police that Abid dragged her by the hair to a bedroom room, and raped her, while the others held her two brothers hostage at knifepoint. Later, two others, Tahseen alias Tyson, and a minor took turns violating her, the police said.

The police identified the accused as Abed, 35, a history sheeter from Seetharam Pet, M Narsing, 23, of Vambay Colony, Ashraf, 20, of Nandanavanam, Mohammed Faizal, 21, and Mohammed Imran, 20, both of Rasoolpura, Tahseen, and a 17-year-old boy from Vambay Colony.

The girl and her siblings were living in the Lalapet area of Hyderabad. Their cousin brought them to her house a week ago, after the children’s parents had reportedly abandoned her.

Accused confesses to the crime

The police said Abed was arrested around 4 pm from Santhosh Nagar, while he was proceeding to Nandanavanam.

He reportedly confessed to the crime. A knife was seized from him, The case was registered under 452 (house trespass), 324 (voluntary causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 376-DA (punishment for gang rape), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and sections 5(g) (gang rape of a child) r/w section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the POCSO Act.

Earlier, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan sought a detailed report on the incident from Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumari, Director General of Police (DGP) Anjani Kumar, and Rachakonda Commissioner of Police DS Chauhan, within 48 hours.

The police said that the girl was sent to the Sakhi Centre for medical examination. “The medical reports are yet to come,” the police said.

Governor directs IRCS to visit the girl

The Governor also directed the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS)’s Ranga Reddy district branch to visit the girl’s house and immediately provide all necessary support to the family.

“The Governor is deeply anguished upon learning about the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl…[sic],” a press statement from the Telangana Raj Bhavan said.

Meanwhile, the Congress and BJP leaders staged protests in Meerpet demanding the immediate arrest of the accused.

They also demanded the high court to take cognizance of the crime. The protestors were later detained by the police.

The incident occurred barely a week after a minor girl of a migrant workers’ family from Madhya Pradesh died after four persons allegedly gang-raped her at Appannapet village in Telangana’s Peddapalli district on the night of 14 August.
