Officials seized stocks of Tentadol-100, containing 100 mg of Tapentadol.
Telangana’s drug regulatory authorities, along with the EAGLE Force, conducted a joint raid on a medical shop in Gajularamaram, Medchal-Malkajgiri district, after receiving information that the habit-forming painkiller Tapentadol was allegedly being sold to teenagers in the surrounding area.
The raid was conducted by the Drugs Wing of the Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG-SAFE) in coordination with the EAGLE Force at Mana Pharmacy and General Store in Mahadevapuram, Phase-III, Gajularamaram.
According to TG-SAFE, officials found Tapentadol tablets being sold without prescriptions issued by a Registered Medical Practitioner. The shop was also allegedly selling the medicine without issuing sale bills and was not maintaining the required Schedule H1 drug register.
During the raid, officials seized stocks of Tentadol-100, containing 100 mg of Tapentadol, along with purchase invoices, sale bill books and relevant registers.
Tapentadol is an opioid analgesic prescribed for the management of moderate to severe pain. It is classified as a Schedule H1 medicine and can cause dependence and other serious health consequences when misused or diverted for non-medical purposes.
TG-SAFE said the action followed credible information that the medicine was being sold to teenagers in the nearby basti area. Further investigation will be conducted, and action will be taken against those found responsible under the applicable law.
The raid was conducted by Dr K. Prabhakar, Assistant Director, Quthbullapur; Drugs Inspectors I. Srikanth of Gajularamaram and K. Murali Krishna of Malkajgiri, under the supervision of G. Sreenivas, Deputy Director-I, Drugs Administration Wing, TG-SAFE, along with EAGLE Force personnel.
158 medical shops found with discrepancies
The Gajularamaram raid comes days after TG-SAFE launched a statewide special enforcement drive against the illegal sale and diversion of habit-forming medicines.
On September 2, the Drugs Wing conducted raids at medical shops across Telangana, focusing on medicines including Tramadol, Pregabalin-containing formulations, Nitrazepam, Alprazolam, Tapentadol, codeine-containing cough syrups and Zolpidem.
Officials detected discrepancies at 158 medical shops during the drive and issued Show Cause Notices to the establishments. The department said action could include suspension or cancellation of drug licences.
The violations detected during the statewide drive included selling prescription medicines without a valid prescription, failing to issue bills, failing to maintain prescription or Schedule H1 registers, dispensing prescription medicines without a Registered Pharmacist, and failing to produce purchase bills and other records.
TG-SAFE has reiterated that Schedule H, Schedule H1 and Schedule X medicines must be sold only against valid prescriptions issued by Registered Medical Practitioners.
The department warned that the illegal sale, diversion, or distribution of prescription medicines for non-therapeutic or abusive purposes would attract strict action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and the rules thereunder.
The department has also appealed to the public to report suspected illegal activities involving medicines, including narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
