Student protest Telangana Secretariat

Synopsis: Students staged a protest outside the Telangana Secretariat demanding that the government fulfil its promise of employment for youngsters. Following the protest, at least 21 students were detained by the police.

A massive protest erupted outside the Telangana Secretariat in Hyderabad on Friday, 4 July, as several hundred students came together, demanding that the government fulfil its promise of employment for youngsters. The protest, organised by various student organisations, except for the Congress’s student wing National Students Union of India (NSUI), resulted in the detention of many.

The protest took place on the same day when Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a massive public meeting at LB Stadium in Hyderabad, highlighting the achievements of the Congress government during its 18-month tenure.

Following the protest, the students were met with police action. While videos of their detention went viral on social media, police sources told South First that at least 21 students were detained.

A protest for jobs and police action

BRS leader and Sircilla MLA KT Rama Rao criticised the Congress government over its alleged failure in keeping its promise of employment, made ahead of the 2023 Assembly polls in the state.

He questioned how police were allowed inside the Osmania University campus and why students were denied their right to protest. Reminding the chief minister that the university was central to the Telangana movement, Rama Rao said students have every right to demand answers regarding the unfulfilled promise of Congress leaders — two lakh job opportunities for youngsters.

“The government had promised two lakh jobs every year, but even after 18 months, not a single vacancy has been filled,” said one of the students who was part of the protest. The protesting students demanded that the government fulfil its promise, which was announced before the Assembly elections.

The students urged the government to ensure that recruitment is initiated before the upcoming local body elections. They also demanded the immediate release of the long-pending job notification calendar.

Speaking to South First, they made it clear that they will intensify their agitation if their demands are not fulfilled before the upcoming local body elections.

A student reiterated their commitment to fight for their rights, “If the government fails to release the job calendar and initiate recruitment, we will conduct a Bus Yatra to Delhi.”
